Republican candidate for Wisconsin Secretary of State Cindy Werner illegally used a man serving a felony sentence to gather nomination signatures, according to an investigation by The Badger Project.

If the signatures are invalid, it would place Werner under the 2,000 needed to appear on the ballot for the August 11 primary elections.

In a June 9 hearing, Wisconsin Elections Commissions Chair Ann Jacobs called some of Werner’s gathered signatures “sketchy,” and said “there’s real issues there.”

Werner told The Badger Project in an email that she spoke with the man collecting the signatures and said he misunderstood the requirements.

In the final years of the Coloma Police Department, two high-ranking Waushara County Sheriff’s Department officials made nearly $75,000 total for their part-time work running the village’s law enforcement agency. The man gathered hundreds of signatures to help Cindy Werner, a Republican from Milwaukee, get on the August primary ballot. People serving a felony sentence are ineligible to vote, and anyone gathering signatures must be an eligible voter.
