At this weekend's Celebration of Leadership we were honored to receive a Mayoral Proclamation to mark the event's 30th anniversary:

Mayoral Proclamation

WHEREAS, GSAFE has its roots in two all-volunteer grassroots organizations founded in 1991, G**s and Le****ns Against Discrimination in Education (GLADE) and Gay and Le***an Educational Employees (GLEE), which came together in 1996 as GLSEN South Central Wisconsin, brought to life through the early leadership of Martha Popp, Vicki Shaffer, and Larry Palm, before becoming Gay Straight Alliance for Safe Schools — or GSAFE — in 2006; and

WHEREAS, in 1997, GSAFE held its first youth scholarship event at the First Unitarian Society, awarding its first two scholarships to Adam Estes and Megan Lemke, beginning a tradition of recognizing the leadership and courage of LGBTQ+ youth in Wisconsin; and

WHEREAS, in 2001, under the leadership of Executive Director Jason Rasmussen and with board chair Judi Devereux challenging him to dream bigger, GSAFE merged its scholarship ceremony and adult prom fundraiser into a single annual gathering at the Concourse Hotel, creating what became known as the Celebration of Leadership; and

WHEREAS, over the past 30 years, GSAFE has awarded 120 scholarships to LGBTQ+ youth — including the five young leaders being recognized here tonight — recognized more than 32 Educators of the Year, and honored more than 28 community activists and organizations through the Judi Devereux Community Activist Award; and

WHEREAS, the Celebration of Leadership has grown from a small gathering into a beloved annual event drawing hundreds of supporters, youth, educators, and community members from across Wisconsin.

WHEREAS, for 30 years the Celebration of Leadership has provided a platform for LGBTQ+ youth across Wisconsin to be seen, heard, and celebrated for their leadership, courage, and contributions to their schools and communities, with student voices centered at the heart of every event;

"Such a positive, helpful, and empowering training. The facilitator was wonderful. His poise and compassionate demeanor created a safe space for staff to explore these critically important subjects."

Ready to get your team trained? Visit gsafewi.org and use the "Contact Us" feature to start the conversation today.

Image description: GSAFE promotional graphic with a quote from a Wisconsin educator reading: "This is easily one of the best presentations I've been a part of for PD. Presenters knew how to engage the crowd in an understanding way." Includes a call to action to book fall 2026 training at $350/hour before August 31st at gsafewi.org.

Our Partners & introduce the YELL- Youth Leaders Fund

More About Y.E.LL: Y.E.L.L: Youth Empowerment 4 Leadership & Liberation Is a 14 month leadership and movement development program for youth ages 14-21 that combines direct action, Black radical tradition and youth to divest from the prison systems using care & community. Developing their skills in storytelling, media and community building will serve as a way to fight punitive punishment and transform their communities without the cops or furthering violence.

YELL Youth are part of a Sun Seeker MKE youth leadership and organizing initiative and have released a youth philanthropy project! YELL youth are giving up to $5000 for Youth based projects in Milwaukee WI, that work towards divesting from prisons and investing in community alternatives to harm & violence. Led by youth, for youth.

WHAT’S Youth Philanthropy?
Youth philanthropy is a powerful challenge to traditional philanthropy, which, in many ways, perpetuates the systems of power and privilege that it claims to address. By putting the decision-making power in the hands of young people (particularly low-income youth of color), youth philanthropy puts decision-making power into the hands of those most impacted.

Thank you :

uchems has been around people like Tubbs, DeGrave and Ouweneel for 25 years. He sees this new era of uber-conservative school boards as an attempt to fracture public education, self-detonate the institution from the inside. It’s why the empathy comment stood out to him — it’s an established talking point of the right, one that directly contradicts pedagogical frameworks.

“When you look at the Watertown Unified School District’s core values, the very first thing off the bat is empathy, then honesty, integrity, perseverance and respect,” Juchems said. “The Watertown School Board failed on all five elements of their core mission and values.”
