Last year gave us an evening filled with celebration, connection, and purpose.
Every moment reminded us of what can happen when a community comes together to support transplant recipients, candidates, caregivers, and families.

A transplant can provide a new beginning, but it does not remove every challenge that patients and their families face. The journey can include ongoing medical appointments, recovery, medication, emotional adjustments, financial concerns, and the responsibility of learning how to navigate life after transplantation.

The Day After Foundation exists to help transplant recipients, candidates, caregivers, and families feel supported throughout that journey. Through education, advocacy, guidance, care boxes, community programs, and direct support, we help families face the days ahead with greater connection and hope. The transplant process can feel overwhelming, especially when you do not know what to expect. The journey often begins with an evaluation that includes medical testing, laboratory work, imaging, and a review by the transplant team.

If approved, the patient may be placed on the national transplant waiting list. Timing can depend on medical urgency, blood type, donor compatibility, and organ availability.

When a match is found, the transplant team begins preparing for surgery. Recovery continues long after the procedure and may include medication, laboratory monitoring, appointments, and ongoing support.

Time once spent in dialysis is now spent doing what Sam loves. After having both kidneys removed due to renal cell carcinoma, Sam spent a year and a half living without kidneys. It was a difficult journey that eventually led to receiving a kidney transplant.

At the time Sam shared this story, life after transplant included walking three miles several times a week and having more time for the people and activities that brought joy. There were still challenges, but transplantation allowed Sam to experience an improved quality of life.

Every transplant journey is different, but stories like Sam’s remind us of the hope, strength, and possibilities that can exist on the other side of a difficult season.

Join Day After Foundation Founder Candice Stephens as she facilitates the Georgia Transplant Foundation’s August monthly support group meeting.

The virtual meeting will take place Wednesday, August 19, 2026, from 7 PM to 8 PM.
These meetings create a welcoming space for Georgia residents in the transplant community to connect, share, listen, and receive encouragement from people who understand the journey.
