Last weekend, the two Explorer squads competed in our annual Explorer Post Intramural Competition in the following events: Marksmanship, Domestic Disturbances, Building Searches, Emergency Medical Response, Traffic Stops, and the POWER Test. This competition serves as a culminating event for all of the information that Explorers learned over the last year. Each Explorer had to rely on their own individual training as well as working in teams to accomplish their tasks. Everyone did a fantastic job! Congratulations to Squad 1, which is lead by Explorer Sergeant Alexis Navarro, for winning the competition with 769 total points!

A big thank you and shout out to Spoon River College in Macomb, for letting us use their facilities for the event!

Earlier this month, explorers learned how to handle high-risk/advanced traffic stops. They were taught how to properly position their vehicles to maximize safety and maintain control of the scene. Emphasis was also placed on clear communication, both with dispatch and with the occupants of the stopped vehicle, to reduce confusion and potential danger. Additionally, explorers practiced techniques for approaching vehicles cautiously while staying aware of possible threats. Over the weekend, our Explorers teamed up with the Sangamon Sheriff Explorers at the Macon County Law Enforcement Training Center in a joint training exercise using their facilities to create realistic training scenarios. Explorers were afforded the opportunity to use the Virtra system, which creates virtual reality situations where police must make tough decisions. Last week, Explorers participated in scenarios for various calls for service. During these scenarios, Explorers were expected to respond in pairs to incidents involving thefts, batteries, noise complaints, and more. Using their training, Explorers had to determine what crime had occurred and the proper action to take. The Explorers did an excellent job utilizing all they have learned over the last two semesters to determine the outcome of each scenario.

Explorers participated in Shoot/Don't Shoot scenarios using a simulation system similar to virtual reality (VR). This technology made the situations feel realistic, allowing practice responding to high-pressure environments in a safe and controlled setting.
Explorers had to quickly evaluate each scenario, determine whether a threat was present, and decide on the appropriate response within seconds. Using this simulation can help improve situational awareness, decision-making skills, and confidence while reinforcing the importance of responsibility and proper judgment.
