The Llano Estacado Audubon Society (LEAS), centered in Lubbock, has a very well-kept birding secret: we have 296 regularly-occurring species in our territory! Adding accidental and hypothetical birds brings our species tally to 432, compared to the bird list for the entire state of Texas, which is just over 600. Llano Estacado Audubon Society, incorporated in 1977, encompasses the following 15 cou

Please join us this Thursday, January 23rd, at 7 PM for a FREE program by Sarah Hollers, the new Executive Director at South Plains Wildlife Rehabilitation Center! Sarah and SPWRC volunteers will bring their Wildlife Ambassadors including a Red-tailed Hawk, Great Horned Owl, Barred Owl, Burrowing Owl, Chihuahuan Raven and a surprise guest! This is a great opportunity for children and adults to see these fascinating creatures up close. The program is at Lubbock’s Garden and Arts Center, next to the Arboretum, at 4215 University Avenue.

They will be selling t-shirt and 5 pound bags of thistle seed for $5 or a box of 6 bags for $20. One bag is $20 on Amazon, so this is a huge steal!

Come meet some new feathery friends and take a selfie! Can't wait to see you there.

LEAS hosted Cub Scout Pack #523 (2nd annual) this evening on the Buffalo Springs Lake LEAS Nature Trail. What a wonderful opportunity to share nature, hike and bird with some enthusiastic young scouts and their families in such a special setting. Thank you Buffalo Springs Lake for welcoming us again to the lake. Thank you, Brad Shine, Joe Cochran, Matt Smith, Melody Huffman and Rebecca Waines for your volunteer efforts to make the event a success. Thank you Emily Crawford for the invitation to hike with the Pack.

!MIGRATION ALERT! Tonight, BirdCast predicts that more than 500 MILLION birds will be migrating under the cover of darkness. Sadly, birds can be disoriented by light pollution, contributing to the hundreds of millions of birds estimated to die in building collisions in the U.S. every year. To help migrating birds, be sure to turn off nonessential lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly, and make glass safer. Just remember: Dim lights at night. Treat glass by day. Find out more at https://birdcast.info/science-to-action/lights-out/
