I had the pleasure of visiting the Heart of Lubbock Community Garden this morning and I have two challenges for you!
Challenge #1: You should totally go and harvest some stuff. I pinched off the basil flowers and picked up some plums!
I say picked up because there’s a bunch on the ground and so I grabbed mostly from there keeping only the ones that weren’t split or bitten.
I found a couple on the tree that were ready and I could reach but if you go you could maybe bring a step stool and get a bunch more! ☺️
Challenge #2: take a picture of your harvest and share it with friends to encourage them to go too! Or better yet take some friends with you!
I plan to be there on this Saturday morning (6/13) at 8 am with Nicholas Wilson, one of the for the Heart of Lubbock Community garden if you want to any tips on what’s ready to be harvested!

Lubbock AgriLife Extension Horticulture is myth busting over here!

Did you know it is NOT ILLEGAL to collect rainwater in Texas? In fact, we have several great examples of rainwater collection sites around Lubbock County. We'll be highlighting some of these public examples to show you how creative West Texans conserve every last drop of this invaluable resource.

First up is the Star Garden at Smith Elementary School. This system is completely self contained, using solar panels to power the pumps needed to fill the 1,100 gallon collection tank. It also serves as a water conservation conversation started with all the young star students and families. Thanks to the High Plains Water District for funding this project through their community grants!

We had a great morning at the today!
We put in tomato cages and added stakes to our pepper plants. We cleared out the mustard that had gone to flower and planted sweet potato slips. We harvested a bunch of carrots, mustard, cabbage, collards, onions, garlic, and radishes! We harvested at least 5 jars of flowers for people to take home and enjoy too!
Come join us again in 2 weeks on Saturday or Monday/wednesday/Friday from 9-11!

is having it’s last Saturday event for May! Check the calendar for the summer months and plan to come out and see us!
We shared at least 12 pounds of produce just today and we still have plenty more! We have carrots, mustard greens, spinach, collards, garlic, onions, and flowers! So come get produce or flowers!
We will be installing frames and supports for our tomato and pepper plants; harvesting and braiding garlic; planting sweet potato slips; and of course pulling grass!
So come learn how to grow with us and take home some produce!

At the our mission is to grow produce to share with the community. We are proud to announce that last year we grew 700 pounds! We weigh everything we harvest and write down who is taking it home! This is a fantastic amount even if it’s not the most since we grew 800 pounds in 2024 and almost 400 pounds in 2023.
Starting in 2025 we also started writing down the zip code for where harvests went and we were pleasantly surprised that 54% of that harvest went to 79403 and 79404 the zip code for the garden and the Patterson Library branch.
We are always happy to share with volunteers who come from all over like our volunteers from McCool Elementary this month! Our mission is to be a source of food for the community so it’s amazing to see that come to life!
Come out MWF from 9-11 and every other Saturday to pick your own produce with us for free!
