Update on Purchase of Wah-Tut-Ca

There has been some confusion and perhaps misunderstanding about social media and other communications regarding the purchase of Wah-Tut-Ca from the Spirit of Adventure Council.

Five years ago, Lantern Light Camps Inc. secured an exclusive term lease from the Spirit of Adventure Council. That lease terminates on December 31, 2026. During the period of lease a summer camp program was developed. As the program evolved, we focused on underserved youth in New England. Partnering with several youth-serving organizations, we introduced hundreds of urban children and young adults to the wonders of the Wah-Tut-Ca Forest and Northwood Lake. We placed special emphasis on supporting children raised by grandparents.

In 2026 readers of New Hampshire’s Manchester Union Leader voted Lantern Light Camps as, “the best camp in New Hampshire”.

In 2025, noting that the Lantern Light Lease would terminate in December 2026, we began negotiations with the Spirit of Adventure Council. We were informed in the fall of 2025 that the council would not consider extending our lease but offered us the chance to buy the property. A small group of camp staff alumni founded the Wannalancit Realty Holding, now doing business as "Wah-Tut-Ca Preservation Association." The Association’s purpose is to acquire the camp to ensure that the land is environmentally protected and preserved, and to keep it available for use by children and young adults in New Hampshire and New England as an outdoor training and recreational facility in perpetuity. Through the efforts of Wah-Tut-Ca Preservation Association, the camp would be maintained, and the Association would support Lantern Light Camps as its landlord/facility partner into the future.

In January 2026 the Association signed a letter of intent to purchase the property no latter than October 1, 2026. In March the Key Foundation Inc, pledged to raise $100,000 to be used toward the purchase.

We are now in the process of completing the legal and title requirements with an expectation of closing before the deadline.

None of this would be possible without the help of The Spirit of Adventure Council. From the very beginning, we started this process with SOA Council President Jeff Reynolds who worked, as he phrased it, “to find a win/win solution for both organizations. Throughout the lease period, we have benefited from the administrative support of SOA Director Jon Pleva.

I cannot give enough praise to SOA CEO John Judge, who balanced his fiduciary responsibilities with determination to find a way for both organizations to benefit. The council's leadership always demonstrated to me a deep respect for the Wah-Tut-Ca legacy. I believe that together we found a way for this legacy to continue serving today's youth. As a lifelong scout and scouter, I am grateful for all that Scouting has done for me personally and will continue to give it my support.

I cannot thank everyone enough who has given their time, efforts, and money to ensure a bright future for Wah-Tut-Ca.

The Key Foundation Inc. wants to thank everyone who has contributed to our efforts to fund the purchase of Wah-Tut-Ca. Your contribution goes to TKF’s $100,000 pledge to the Wah-Tut-Ca Preservation Association (half funded by our crowd sourced donations and half by one generous anonymous donor). This accounts for about 5.5% of the purchase price of $1.8 million. We are on a journey to keep the spirit alive.

We must close on the property before October 1, 2026, or it will be sold for development. Board members of the Wah-Tut-Ca Preservation Association have committed to more than a third of that amount. This includes the Key Foundation’s contribution. The Association with TKF’s partnership is working to borrow or raise the money need to cover the short-fall to buy the property by the deadline. The next step is to retire the debt as soon as possible.
The Association’s goal is to raise a total of $2.5 million in the next 18 months. This would allow us (alums of Wah-Tut-Ca), to 1) purchase the property, 2) retire any debt, 3) perform critical deferred maintenance and 4) develop a permanent endowment to ensure the maintenance of the Wah-Tut-Ca/Lantern Light Camps property.

You can take action.

Wah-Tut-Ca is being sold. You can help us to save it by August 11th!

The Boy Scout council has signed a purchase and sale agreement. A coalition of camp alumni is working to buy the property back so it can continue operating as Lantern Light Camps, voted the number one summer camp in New Hampshire by readers of the Manchester Union Leader. If we fall short, the council's backup plan is to sell to a residential developer who will subdivide camp into 55+ housing. That developer is already building down the road.

The Key Foundation, a strategic partner in this effort, has committed $100,000 towards the overall purchase price.

As of this post, the campaign is 35% of the way to its goal. The ask is a tax-deductible donation of $1,000 by August 11th, and more if you are able. The first $50,000 is matched by a generous donor, so gifts count double.

This week, we remember and celebrate the life of Frank Barre on what would have been his birthday.

Frank understood something that many spend a lifetime trying to learn: people thrive when they feel they belong. Whether around a campfire, in a meeting, or simply through a thoughtful conversation, Frank had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed, valued, and part of something bigger than themselves.

His leadership was never about recognition or titles. It was about service. It was about building community, investing in others, and creating opportunities for young people to discover confidence, friendship, and purpose.

As The Key Foundation continues its mission, we carry forward many of the values Frank embodied: leadership through service, the power of community, and the belief that every person deserves a place where they belong.

This week, we invite you to reflect on someone who helped you feel welcomed, encouraged, or inspired. For so many of us, that person was Frank.

Happy Birthday, Frank. Your legacy continues to shape lives and strengthen communities.

We are saddened to join with our friends in the Scouting community in sharing the news of the passing of Richard "Dick" Preble.

Richard (or "Mr. Preble" as most of us knew him) was a legend in the northern Massachusetts & southern New Hampshire Scouting community and a steward of the camps and youth outdoor programs that we all cherish. He was a lifelong supporter of Lone Tree, and was among its first campers back in 1946. He was also a tireless leader and contributor to both Wah-Tut-Ca and Camp Onway, and served as the Council Camping Chairman for 20 years.

Mr. Preble was just always there when you needed him. He had this amazing knack for showing up at one of the camps in the morning, and then again at another camp just an hour or two later, leading us to joke that he had dug "Preble Tunnels" between the camps so he get from one camp to another faster. There were no actual tunnels, just an incredibly kind and dedicated man who wanted to be there to help with what whatever was needed.

Thank you for all that you did for us and our camps, Mr. Preble. You will be missed by so many of us.
