Hi gang,

Tonight's program at JGAP is ON!

As of this writing, we have a full house and all the parking passes are taken. Alas, though space is infinite (or effectively so) our parking is not.

If you are at the Hocking Hills State Park Lodge or in the cabins, you may walk over.

If you arrive a bit earlier than the scheduled time of the program, you can see the alignment of our plaza with the sunset (see picture) as we are near the summer solstice.

The talk begins at 8:45 PM, and it gets fully dark only after 10:30 or so. The moon, however, will be wonderful in our scopes early on.

See you there!

Hi gang,

The Saturday, June 13 program at the John Glenn Astronomy Park is ON.

We expect skies to be not quite as clear as last night, but Jupiter and Venus should be visible in the west before it gets fully dark. After that, we'll have periods of clear skies to enjoy the stars.

The program starts at 8:45 PM, but the skies are not fully dark until well after 10:00. See you there!

We have a full house this evening. (And last night we ran out of parking space). So, alas, there are no more parking passes.

However, if you're in the Hocking Hills Lodge, or the Hocking Hills State Park Cabins, you may walk over. The path to JGAP is clearly marked and is between cabins 8 and 9. Once on the path, the walk is only about 200 yards.

If you arrive after dark, be considerate to those on site and keep any lights you may have down.

Hi gang,

Skies will be clear tonight for the program at the John Glenn Astronomy Park, on Friday June 12, so the program is ON!

Be aware that at this time of year it does not get fully dark until around 10:00 PM.

The program starts at 8:45, however, and we'll be looking at Venus and Jupiter before skies are totally dark.

See you there!

The Milky Way will be a treat for those who linger until after midnight. (At which time, the best "astronomical instrument" will be a lawn chair or blanket.)

If it's somewhat clear where you are after sunset tonight, look towards the west and try to spot the two bright "stars" setting behind the trees.

They are Venus (the brighter one) and Jupiter.

Both are way over on the other side of the sun from us. Venus, however, is much closer- only 1.2 AU (An AU is the mean distance between Earth and the sun, about 92 million miles or so). Jupiter is 6 AU away. Even though it is much bigger, its distance from the sun (and us) makes it appear significantly dimmer.

From tonight on, the two worlds will appear to separate, with Jupiter moving lower and Venus rising each night.

Happily, you don't need a dark site to view this show.

The forecast for JGAP today and tonight calls for cloudy skies and, quite likely, periods of rain.

Therefore the program (Saturday, June 6) is called off.

We hope to see you on a clear night in the future!

Hi gang,

Just a heads up that there is a >slight< chance of Auroral activity (the Northern Lights) visible in Ohio tonight.

A blast of material from the sun is headed our way and is expected to produce a moderately strong Aurora. If we're very lucky, this could be visible to those of us in Ohio.

In general, the further north you are, the better. So, if you're in the Hocking Hills area, JGAP is a great place to go to get away from the lights and enjoy the sky. If, however, you're north of JGAP (in Columbus, say) it is better to go north. Find a place away from lights and look northward.

Keep checking this "current auroral oval" map to see what conditions are. If there's a lot of red, and the green part of the blob reaches Ohio, it might be a good time to go out.

Good luck!

The program for the night of Saturday, May 30 at the John Glenn Astronomy Park is ON.

The forecast calls for warm weather and mostly clear skies. There is a possibility of haze, so be sure to check the sky before setting out.

We'll be looking at Jupiter, Venus and the bright moon rising in the East just after 9:15 or so. The program starts at 8:45 PM
