Let’s talk about what we think we know. And what’s actually true.
There are plenty of misconceptions floating around about foster care and youth homelessness. These are not just harmless rumors. They shape how we look at these children, how we treat them, and if we show up for them when they need us.

Foster youth are not simply placed in care because they did something wrong. They are children who, even in the face of uncertainty, remain resilient day after day. They are bright, and far too often misunderstood.

This May - Foster Care Awareness Month - we want to change the narrative one fact at a time. Spread the truth about foster children, so that tomorrow will hold more hope for them.

Remember when you were a child and you anxiously counted the days until summer vacation? ☀️
Well, foster children know this feeling all too well. But for different reasons.
Instead of soaking up the sun and playing under sprinklers, these foster children lose their routines, trusted adults, and social connections, all of which are very important for development.

This transition can be really hard and sometimes opens wounds that were already there before. At Set To Thrive, we believe every child deserves to feel loved, included, and Set To Thrive. ☀️💛

Did you know the average child enters foster care at only 8 years old? 8️⃣
They are old enough to remember everything. To be confused when they are taken away from their families and placed in care.
And only 3% will have the chance to earn a higher education. 🎓
1 in 5 of the 20,000 aged out every year will end up homeless within the next 2 years of leaving care. 💔

We share these numbers not to frighten or overwhelm, but to spread awareness. Because sometimes that is how change begins. 💚
They are not only children. Some are young adults who are stuck with no resources and no caring figure to help them. And they deserve hope just as much as any other. 💚

No child asks to be in this situation.
They are frightened, lost, and confused. Often placed into homes without proper time to adjust.

Maya’s story may be fictional. But for the 50,000 children in California alone, this is a harsh reality they must face. Not knowing where they’ll sleep, how long they’ll stay, or if they’ll have people show up when it really counts.

We share her story because numbers never do enough justice. These are not just empty statistics.
These are children, just like Maya, with dreams, hopes, and lives that were turned upside down. Sometimes all in a day.

Maya deserved more. And so do they.
These are not just numbers; they are faces.
