In Memoriam: Remembering Peter Checkland

The System Dynamics community mourns the passing of Peter Checkland, the visionary developer of Soft Systems Methodology. Peter’s work fundamentally shaped Operational Research, and in many ways, anticipated the rise of data science and change management disciplines in the century that followed.

Our sincerest condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues. His legacy will continue to inspire generations. A full obituary and tributes to his remarkable achievements will follow in due course.

▶️ The recording of the seminar “Advancing Accessibility in System Dynamics Education Using Generative AI” with Raafat Zaini and Allie Zombron of James Madison University’ is now available on our website!

Conventional diagram-heavy materials can create barriers in both learning and participation, while standard accessibility tools often lack the specificity needed to interpret System Dynamics representations accurately. In response, this project developed a structured prompting approach to help generative AI recognize, interpret, and describe the components and relationships embedded in these diagrams. The resulting custom GPT produces both fuller descriptive outputs and shorter alternative text, allowing images to be translated into language that is more usable within accessible digital environments.

🎯 FREE EVENT! ▶️ “AI-Powered Causal Loop Diagrams – From Ideation to Insight” with Ninad Jagdish of BTN

This webinar examines how AI can be applied across the full CLD workflow—from early ideation and collaborative exploration to structured, shareable outputs. The session focuses on practical use cases rather than theory, highlighting where AI meaningfully supports systems thinking practice.

LET’S PLAY THE BEER GAME! 🤩

The Beer Game is a simulation game designed to teach players about the complexities of supply chain management. This game puts players in the shoes of a four-stage supply chain, where they must work to meet beer demand while juggling inventory and costs. Through hands-on experience, participants gain valuable insights into the real-life challenges and dynamics of supply chains, far more effective than any lecture or textbook.

Join the ranks of those who have experienced the eye-opening lessons of the Beer Game and learn how your decisions can impact the entire supply chain.

🎯 CHECK THIS OUT! ▶️ System Dynamics Helps Evaluate Anticipatory Action on Cholera Outbreaks by Pei Shan Loo and L Milano

Cholera remains a significant public health problem in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with 13,000 suspected cases and 236 deaths reported in 2022 alone. In light of these complexities and volatilities, it is crucial for humanitarian response to move from a largely reactive to an anticipatory approach according to the Centre for Humanitarian Data. ⛑️

Discover how the Centre for Humanitarian Data used System Dynamics simulation to present evidence for anticipatory action on cholera outbreaks. 🔄

🎯 FREE EVENT! ▶️ “System Dynamics and Complexity Theory: Approaches for Managing Complex Systems” with D. N. Gupta of National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS)

This webinar presents an integrated perspective that combines System Dynamics and complexity theory to better understand and manage such systems. It outlines how System Dynamics supports the analysis of system structure through causal relationships and feedback, while complexity theory provides a framework for understanding emergence, adaptation, and self-organization in uncertain environments.
