The deadline to submit nominees for the Leopold Conservation Award is June 15!

This award honors farmers and forestland owners who go above and beyond in their management of soil health, water quality, and wildlife habitat on working land.

Sponsored by & across 28 states. In New England, the $10,000 award is presented by and the New England chapter of American Farmland Trust. Nominations are due by 6/15.

Leopold was a forester, ecologist, author, and conservationist best known for his concept of a “land ethic” — a call for an ethical, caring relationship between people and the land they manage.

Cherry trees and magnolias have been in full bloom in the cities and towns across the country, as well as the trees within our local forests, where color is dotting hillsides and stream beds.

On your next walk, take time to appreciate how incredible these flowers are! 🌸

More and more people are asking: Where do our materials come from, how are they made, and what roles forests can play in addressing climate change?

✨Our panel of experts explored these questions, emphasizing that sustainable construction begins long before a building goes up — and reminded us that there are only 2 ways to get the materials we need: to grow it or mine it.

🌎Overall, the event highlighted that it’s not a single actor, organization, or solution that is going to help us reduce emissions and tackle the climate crisis. It requires many different people, jobs, and sectors all working together.

🪵 At NEFF, our Exemplary Forestry approach is one model for how we can manage forests to support climate resilience, biodiversity AND sustainable wood production.

Special thanks to for hosting us and creating space for this important discussion! It was great to come together for an evening to lean in to what’s possible, what solutions exist, and how we can make them come to life.

See you at the next NEFF event!

🚨 Attention! This summer, NEFF is conducting a carefully planned timber harvest at Sortwell Memorial Forest in Wiscasset, Maine.

Here’s what you need to know:
🥾 Trails remain open! Stay at least 300 feet from active logging equipment
🚙 Main parking area will be closed during active harvesting (~3 months)
🗺️ 97 acres of mature mixed woods, streams, and wetlands included in the harvest area
✨ Goal is to encourage new white pine growth, boost species diversity, and strengthen climate resilience
🐟 Wide buffers will be maintained along Ward Brook and wetlands to protect brook trout habitat and deer wintering areas
🪵 Woody debris left on the forest floor is intentional! It protects soil, returns nutrients, and shelters young seedlings

Timber harvests like this are a key part of responsible, long-term forest stewardship. Creating healthier, more resilient forests for wildlife, water, and future generations 🌲

The New England Forestry Foundation is deeply saddened by the serious fire at the Robbins Lumber mill in Searsmont, Maine that occurred on Friday, May 15.

We offer our condolences to the loved ones of the firefighter who lost his life battling the blaze, and hope for a full recovery for the other individuals who were injured.

We also hope that a speedy restoration of the mill will be possible. It plays a crucial role in Maine’s forest products economy and employment in the Midcoast region.
