We provide ongoing medical care to children in Ethiopia through partnerships with local schools.

Eyerus, her mother, and one of our partners in Ethiopia will be leaving for India in about 2 weeks. It has been 7 months of advocating, networking, pivoting, and refusing to give up. All of her paperwork is in place, which was an enormous task. Our staff and partners in Ethiopia are amazing.

Upon arrival in India, she will undergo another cardiac catheterization (which will be her third catheterization since March). At that time, the team will determine if it is safe to close the 3 holes in her heart.

What an incredible night!

Thank you to everyone who came out to our 4th Annual Evening of Empowerment on Sunday night. We are humbled, grateful and encouraged!

A long-awaited update on Eyerus…

After months of persistent work from both us here in the states and our staff in Ethiopia, Eyerus is going to India for a life-saving heart surgery. Her situation remains very high-risk, but the resources in India will provide a much better opportunity for a positive outcome. The decision to move ahead with surgery was made by her mother, and we are committed to supporting her in all of the logistics and funding to make this happen.

It’s a lot. Overwhelming, actually. But we know that she will not survive more than a few years if nothing is done. So we take this step of faith.

A few specific prayer requests at this time:

That Eyerus would maintain (or improve) her weight — she is currently 21 lbs at 5 years of age because her heart is working so hard.

Favor from government offices as we quickly work to get all of her paperwork in place for her and her mother to travel abroad.

Peace for her Mom. What an incredibly difficult decision for her to make.

Provision of funding — we are grateful for the partnership that we have made with the team in India. They have been gracious towards our situation. However, this is still a significant amount to take on.

We are so grateful for so many of you who have been praying for Eyerus. Please keep praying!

What a morning!

Our teams came in 1st and 3rd in the relay triathlon!

We are incredibly grateful for the two relay triathlon teams who took on the challenge of swimming, biking, and running — not just for the finish line, but to make a difference for our work! Their dedication turned meters and miles into meaningful impact. Together, they raised just over $10,000, helping support our work and the people and communities that we serve.

But the impact went far beyond the funds raised. Every meter and mile, every conversation, every share, and every person who learned about Medan Initiative helped shine a light on our mission. These athletes gave us something just as valuable as their fundraising efforts — greater awareness of the work we do and the difference your support can make.

We are so thankful for these incredible teams for using their passion and determination to amplify our mission. 💙

They raised $6,000, which will provide 2 meals per day for 340 students for 3 months!

One week to go!

Our incredible triathlon teams are putting in the final meters and miles before race day, pushing themselves to raise funds that will help us make an even greater impact.

We are $925 away from our $6,000 goal!

We now have 2 teams competing in the Lititz Recenter Triathlon to support our nutrition program at RAEY School!

$6,000 will provide 2 meals per day for all 340 students for 3 months. We are currently at $4,500 raised!

Race day is August 9!

When this beautiful girl came through our clinic in March, a concerning heart murmur was noted on exam. She has since received a full cardiac work up and we are working on getting her scheduled for surgery through our partnership with The Cardiac Center of Addis. This is imperative to prevent long-term complications.

This is why we do what we do.
