Congratulations to the Weston Community Arboretum, UK on their recent ArbNet accreditation!

International accreditation for Weston-super-Mare's trees 🌳 💚

Weston's trees and green spaces are being celebrated after the Weston Tree and Plant Group successfully secured international accreditation for the town’s new Community Arboretum.

The Weston Tree and Plant Group – made up of North Somerset Council, Weston-super-Mare Town Council, Weston-super-Mare Civic Society, local interest groups and community volunteers – has achieved accreditation through ArbNet, the international network dedicated to supporting arboreta and tree-focused professionals around the world.

The accreditation recognises the newly established Weston Community Arboretum. This project showcases and promotes the town's 59 most significant individual trees and groups of trees within green spaces within a four-mile radius.

Locations including Clarence Park West, home to its distinctive windswept London Plane trees (see photo 📷 ), and Milton Cemetery, with its diverse collection of trees and wildflowers, are among the sites that help tell the story of the town's natural heritage.

The Weston Community Arboretum has grown from the group's passion for highlighting the rich variety of trees found across Weston. Created not only as a record of the town's trees, it provides an educational and inspirational resource for residents and visitors alike, while encouraging people to value, protect and plant trees for future generations.

The Weston Tree and Plant Group hopes the project will encourage more residents to get involved in local tree planting initiatives and consider planting appropriate tree species in their own gardens and communities 🫶

Great recommendations from Montana!

Drought Tolerant Trees
With the heat and drought this summer, we've had a lot of questions asking for the best trees that would resist hot and dry conditions. Here are some of our most frequent recommendations.
Maple, Hot Wing: Hot Wings and other various tatarian maples have done amazing for us in our most dry conditions. One of our Hot Wings have been thriving in decomposed granite with no water for the past 15 years now.
Maple, Amur. This tree has long been used as a windbreak among farms in the plains. This tree excels as resisting high wind areas and providing a brilliant vibrant red in the fall. We've had one without issue for the past 14 years now.
Honeylocust, Northern Acclaim. Thornless and seedless, this new variety of honeylocust has been gaining a lot of traction and for good reason. These are a very drought resistant, wind resistant, and fast growing tree. They make for an excellent shade tree that still allows some sun to reach below allowing grass and other plants to still thrive below.
Elm, Princeton. Another great shade tree, the princeton elm has long been a part of our garden here and we've never had any issues with them. They grow pretty fast, provide excellent shade and are great at resisting the wind. They prove to be a very low maintenance tree that have a very natural and beautiful form.
Poplar, Siouxland. These are the caraganas of the tree world. These trees are specifically grown to resist the harshest of winds and to grow exceptionally quickly. They are easily the fastest growing tree we have.
Oak, Bur. These trees are sturdy against everything. It can withstand -50, high winds, and drought. This tree provides some of the best shade of all our shade trees and has wonderful dark glossy leaves that make it stand out from other shade trees. A personal favorite of mine.
Junipers. We have many varieties of junipers that are classically drought resistant. These are great barriers to mark your property line.

We currently have all of these in stock. The nursery is open from Thursday to Monday from 10am to 5pm.
