Not all water enters an ecosystem through rainfall. Along parts of California's coast, redwood forests can capture moisture directly from fog, providing an additional source of water for some of the tallest trees on Earth.

From rainfall and groundwater to reservoirs, rivers, and even fog, water reaches communities and ecosystems through many different pathways. Scientists and water quality professionals continue to study how water moves through the environment, helping expand our understanding of the broader water cycle and the many pathways water takes through the world around us. 🌫️🌲🛤️

If you've ever heard a loud bang, thump, or rattling sound after turning off a faucet, you may have experienced what's known as "water hammer." The noise occurs when moving water suddenly stops or changes direction, creating a pressure surge inside a plumbing system.

While the sound can be surprising, it highlights something easy to overlook: water is constantly moving through a complex network of pipes, valves, fixtures, and treatment equipment before it reaches a tap. Understanding how water behaves, from pressure and flow to filtration and treatment, helps water quality professionals, manufacturers, and service providers develop solutions that support water use in homes and businesses.

This October, if your plumbing makes a mysterious noise, the explanation may be more science than supernatural. 👻🔨🎃
