This June, we celebrate the incredible legacy of Dorothy Brooke — a woman whose compassion continues to change the lives of working horses, donkeys, mules, and the people who depend on them.

When Dorothy arrived in Cairo in 1930, she was heartbroken by the suffering of former military horses forced to work while exhausted, underfed, and neglected. She made a promise to help them — and dedicated her life to relieving their suffering.

Today, the Brooke family of charities carries that mission forward in more than 11 countries, bringing veterinary care, education, and training to some of the world’s most vulnerable communities.

By becoming a monthly supporter of Brooke USA, for as little as $10 a month, you can help continue Dorothy’s legacy every single day. Your recurring gift provides steady, reliable care for hardworking animals and the families who rely on them for survival.

Join us in creating a kinder world — one horse, donkey, mule, and family at a time. 🧡

He was once a war hero.

Old Bill carried soldiers through the chaos of World War I—brave, loyal, and unwavering. But when the war ended, he was left behind… traded for a life of exhaustion, hunger, and hardship on the streets of Cairo.

When Dorothy Brooke saw him—frail, overworked, and forgotten—she didn’t look away. She saw his story. His sacrifice. His suffering. And she made a promise: to fight for him, and for all the others just like him.

One letter changed everything. The world listened. And because of that compassion, more than 5,000 war horses were rescued and given the dignity they deserved.

Old Bill wasn’t just one horse. He became the beginning of a movement—one that still lives on today through Brooke and Brooke USA.

This , we honor the horse who sparked it all—and the woman who refused to let him be forgotten.

When Dorothy Brooke arrived in Cairo, she wasn’t looking for a mission.

But she couldn’t ignore what was right in front of her.

Horses collapsed in the streets.
Donkeys overloaded beyond exhaustion.
Animals working through injury, hunger, and pain.

These weren’t forgotten animals.

They were essential—the only source of income for families living on the edge of survival.

Dorothy understood something many did not: It wasn’t cruelty. It was poverty.

And that understanding changed everything.

🧡Because you can’t solve suffering without understanding its cause. But once you do, you can make change possible.

Follow along this week for the story that opened hearts to Dorothy and the lost war horses.

Before there was a movement… there was a moment.

A single horse.
A single story.
A single realization that something had to change.

In the weeks ahead, we’ll introduce you to Old Bill—one of the many war horses who helped shape Dorothy Brooke’s mission and open the world’s eyes to a hidden reality.

Because sometimes, one story is all it takes to change everything. The legacy Dorothy created lives on, see how.

Dorothy Brooke might surprise you.

She wasn’t just compassionate—she was known for her wit and sense of humor.

Those who met her described her as:
✨ Tactful
✨ Practical
✨ Deeply kind
✨ And never overly sentimental

She understood something powerful: real change doesn’t come from emotion alone—it comes from action, patience, and understanding.

🧡Compassion, with clarity. It's what drove her to be a catalyst for change--to write a letter that changed the course of history.

The love of a horse… the love of a donkey—it all begins the same: with connection, trust, and care.

Meet 7-year-old Calvin and his favorite donkey, Toto, from Nakuru, Kenya. Hand-raised since he was a foal, Toto shares a special bond with Calvin—so special that he’s the only donkey Calvin will ride. To show his pride, Calvin even gave Toto a tie… and now his new foal wears one too.

This is the legacy of Dorothy Brooke—recognizing that every equine, whether horse, donkey, or mule, deserves compassion and respect. Through Brooke USA’s Donkey Care Clubs, children like Calvin are learning how to care, advocate, and pass that knowledge on to their families and communities.

Because when we teach kindness to animals, we create a kinder world for all. 🌍

“The hardest fight… is worth winning.” — Dorothy Brooke

This Dorothy Brooke Month, I’m reminded why her legacy inspires all we do at Brooke USA—and why Brooke USA's Ponies & Pearls means so much to me.

What started as a vision has grown into a celebration of compassion, honoring the working horses, donkeys, and mules who support communities worldwide.

As founder and chair, I’m proud to carry Dorothy’s mission forward—creating impact through community and purpose. Join us in Aiken as we celebrate and continue the fight together.
