URGENT NEED: For Nevada’s horses, the danger doesn’t end when the flames are gone.
Imagine looking across the place your horse calls home and seeing what wildfire has left behind.
You see pastures that once provided food and shelter, left gray, covered in ash, with little more than scorched earth where green fields once stood. The fences that once marked safe boundaries are reduced to burnt remains, leaving behind twisted metal, broken posts and dangerous debris across the ground. Hay and feed are entirely lost to the flames or rendered dangerous and unusable by smoke.
And the horses themselves bear the weight of what happened. Breathing can become labored after prolonged smoke exposure. Injuries and burns can leave them frightened, exhausted and vulnerable. In the quiet after the flames, the familiar places you and your horses once knew have become unrecognizable.
For many, this image is a devastating reality.
And rebuilding after wildfire is not something that happens overnight. It means extensive cleanout of rubble, rebuilding of structures, healing of earth and re-growing of pastures, replacing hay, feed, water systems and equipment that was lost, providing veterinary care to horses in need, and helping owners find a way forward when so much has been taken from them.
