Small changes can make a world of difference for a working donkey.

We’re delighted to announce that Animal Relief for Rural Communities (ARRC), an incredible South African animal welfare organization, has received additional funding from Brooke USA to expand its work from Selwane into the neighboring communities of Majeje and Mashishimale.

In these communities, working donkeys may face improvised harnesses made from wire, rope or plastic, poorly maintained and overloaded carts, and limited access to water, shelter and veterinary care.

ARRC is taking a practical, hands-on approach—providing:
💧 Donkey water points
🩺 Health clinics
🪢 Safer harnesses and bridles
🛒 Cart repairs and maintenance
📚 Community workshops on donkey welfare
The goal is simple: healthier donkeys, fewer work-related injuries and a better quality of life for the animals families depend on.

And this kind of work doesn’t happen just once. Donkeys need care every day, and communities need reliable support to keep improvements going.

That’s where Brooke USA Guardians make a lasting difference. ❤️

Guardians are our monthly donors. Their ongoing gifts provide the steady, dependable support that helps Brooke USA and our partners continue this vital work—project after project, community after community.

🐴 Become a Guardian today and help make sure working donkeys get the care they need, all year long.

🚜 There's a question we hear often: Why can't we just give people tractors and trucks instead?

It's a fair question, and it comes from a good place. But the answer breaks your heart a little and opens it too.

🌍 An estimated 600 million people depend on working horses, donkeys, and mules. For them, mechanization isn't a choice they're passing up. It's a door that isn't open to them yet.

The trails are too steep. The farms too small. The fuel too expensive, and the spare parts too far away. A broken-down tractor in a remote village in East Africa or the highlands of Colombia isn't progress. It's a crisis.

But a donkey? She knows the path. She'll carry the water, haul the harvest, and get the kids to school. And next spring, she may give you a foal.

These animals aren't a symbol of poverty. They are pillars of survival and dignity. ❤️

We look forward to the day mechanization reaches every corner of the world. But until then, the most powerful thing we can do is invest in knowledge, care, and community.

Because a healthy, well-loved working equine doesn't just change one life. She changes everything. 🐴

🧡 Today, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the cultures, traditions, histories and living communities of Indigenous peoples.

For many Native American communities, horses are far more than animals. They are connected to family, culture, tradition, identity and community - and those relationships continue to this day.

At Brooke USA, we are honored to support Native American communities working to improve the health and welfare of their horses. Through our Native American Equine Welfare Initiative, we are partnering with communities to expand access to veterinary and farriery services, provide practical education and help build local skills that can support horses for generations to come.

We recognize that this work begins with listening, learning and respecting the knowledge and priorities of the communities we serve. Today and every day, we celebrate the strength, resilience and enduring connections between Indigenous peoples and their horses. 🐎

Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

600 million people depend on working horses, donkeys and mules to survive. And yet, in many parts of the world, these animals remain invisible to the laws and policies meant to protect them.

Brooke USA is working to change that by advocating at the national level and making sure working animal welfare has a seat at the table. Because the families who depend on these animals deserve more than compassion. They deserve policies that see them, protect them and work for them.

Good policy isn’t abstract. For an equine-dependent family, it can mean the difference between hardship and hope.

More and more donors are using Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) to support charitable causes in a tax-advantaged way. In fact today, October 8th, is DAF Day! If you have a DAF – there is no better way to show your compassion and help working horses, donkeys and mules – than by making a donation today. 🧡

Check out www.BrookeUSA.org/donor-advised-funds to learn more.

Your donation will provide veterinary services, compassionate handling training, properly fitting tack and community trainings to equine owning communities. Every healthy horse and donkey keeps families fed, children in school and kitchen stoves shinning bright. 🐴
