Happy last day of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, & Pacific Islander Heritage Month! Let’s celebrate the valuable contributions and acknowledge some challenges faced by the AAPI community.
-AANHPI individuals are highly diverse, representing over 70 countries and speaking more than 2000 languages.
-AANHPI members come from various ethnic groups and backgrounds in both their home countries and the US as Asia is home to half of the global population. Despite this they are frequently generalized together which causes issues with representation and support within the United States.
-As of 2019, there were approximately 22.9 million people of Asian, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander descent in the United States. They make up about 7% of the total US population.
-AANHPI representation in government and politics has progressed significantly, with leaders like Ted Lieu and Kamala Harris achieving notable milestones. Despite being the fastest-growing demographic group in the United States, AANHPI individuals are the least likely to hold elected office, comprising less than 1% of all elected leaders.
-Remember, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders have unique stories and experiences. Take time to learn about their diversity and experiences.
