CAPCE

CAPCE is the Commission on Accreditation for Pre-Hospital Continuing Education CAPCE, by its charter, maintains the standards for the delivery of EMS CE.

The Commission on Accreditation for Prehospital Continuing Education (CAPCE), was founded in 1992 under the vision and guidance of Janet Head, then President of the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT). Janet recognized that not all EMS continuing education (CE) was of a level or quality that she would expect for practicing EMS providers. Thus, she sought support from the

leadership of other EMS leadership organizations such as The National Association of EMS Educators (NAEMSE), The National Registry of EMTs (NREMT), The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and The National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP). Together these organizations worked to provide an accreditation service for EMS based CE. Those standards include requirements for active medical direction, valid post-tests, quality infrastructure, sound educational design including delivery methodology, marketing, fees, evaluation, student record keeping and data reporting. CAPCE accreditation exists so that EMS providers have access to high quality, standard-driven continuing education activities and are awarded credit for participating in such activities.

We are also proud to recognize CAPCE Board Member Juan March, MD, FACEP, FAEMS, who will present “Current Status of Prehospital Blood Transfusions” on Saturday from 10:30 to 11:10 a.m. His presentation will explore the latest research involving pediatric patients, calcium management, and rural EMS systems.

New research from CAPCE is now available online! 📊

“Trends in CAPCE-Accredited Emergency Medical Services Continuing Education Over the Past Decade” draws on CAPCE’s database of more than 24 million accredited continuing education completion records to examine how EMS education evolved from 2014 to 2024.

The findings show significant growth in asynchronous, virtual instructor-led, certification-based, and interactive learning formats, while live, in-person course completions remained statistically stable. Asynchronous learning experienced the most dramatic change, more than tripling over the decade.

This research provides an important look at how EMS professionals are accessing continuing education and highlights the need to continue studying what these changes mean for learners, educators, and the broader EMS community.

A resilience training program in Sandy is helping first responders manage stress and burnout through breathwork, mindfulness, and practical neuroscience-based techniques. Asking for help isn’t weakness; it’s part of staying strong, healthy, and ready to serve.

Honoring a legacy of leadership, education, and service.

CAPCE, in partnership with the National Association of EMS Educators (NAEMSE), proudly established the annual Richard Beebe Scholarship for NAEMSE’s Level One Instructor Course.

Created in memory of Rich Beebe, a distinguished former member of both organizations’ Boards of Directors, the scholarship celebrates his passion for teaching and lasting contributions to the EMS community. Each Level One Instructor Course student at the NAEMSE Symposium also receives a copy of *Foundations of Education: An EMS Approach* to support their journey as an EMS educator.

Rich’s influence continues to inspire the next generation of EMS professionals.
