At today's weekly meeting, we heard from Chriz Dally, Executive Director of the Museum of Deaf History, Arts and Culture in Olathe. Her American Sign Language presentation was vocally interpreted by Tia Welch. Terrific! Club President Kevin Day is on the left.

Today, Lenexa Rotary Club donated another 75 books to the Rosehill Elementary library. So far, our club has donated 175 books to the Lenexa school, as well as a recent monetary grant. Go Rockets!

Yesterday's meeting speaker was Scott Oberkron, Executive Director of the Kansas City Automotive Museum, which is the only public auto museum in KC. The museum focuses on Kansas City's ties to the history of the automobile industry and celebrates the culture, artistry, industry, and innovation of the car.

Yesterday's weekly meeting was another fun and informative one.

Our Sergeant-at-Arms presents members with a bottle of wine to commemorate their birthdays and anniversaries. We had a bunch of them yeaterday!

Sarah Donohoe was presented with her "Paul Harris + 5 pin by Phil Hammond and Matt Janes (Sarah's the one not wearing a tasteful Hawaiian shirt).

Our guest speaker was Bob Hennecke with the Jewish Community Center of Kansas City. Bob told us about the "Maccabi Games" which were recently held at "The J" and other Johnson County sports venues. The games are an Olympic-style competition for Jewish Teens from around the world. Over 900 athletes participated. Bob is pictured at the podium, and with Club President Kevin Day.

Rosehill Elementary School principal Dr. Samantha Luchtel is presented with a $3000 grant from the Lenexa Rotary Club by members Bill and Betty McCollum. The grant will be used for the school's "Rocket Awards" program. The money for the grant was raised through individual member donations in the annual "Cans for Kids" drive led by club Sergeant-at-Arms Fred Spears.

Our speaker last Friday was Dr. Brent Beasley.

Kansas City resident and physician Brent Beasley was diagnosed with Alzheimer's at the age of 57. Brent shared how the diagnosis and treatment journey has impacted him and his family and why a growing momentum in research and treatment gives him a renewed sense of optimism. It was a moving and inspiring message. Dr. Beasley is pictured in the top photo below.

Also during the meeting, we welcomed a new member, Barry Schneider, and presented a Paul Harris Fellowship to Immediate Past President Steve Adams.

At this week's meeting we heard from two special young people. Kai Jeffery was our club's outbound Rotary Youth Exchange student. He just returned from a year in Belgium, and shared the highlights of his remarkable experience. Kai intends to pursue a career as a teacher in an overseas setting.

Valentina Maslovaric was president of our club-sponsored Interact Club as Shawnee Mission Northwest. Val was a remarkable leader and accompanied two groups of fellow Interactors on water project missions to Puerto Rico with Past District Governor Greg Peterson and Immediate Past President Steve Adams. PDG Greg presented Val with a $3000 scholarship award for her outstanding service to Rotary. Val plans to attend Kansas State University this Fall.

Lead to Read KC matches volunteers to KCMO and KCK 3rd graders for weekly lunch hour reading sessions. Less than 1/4 of Kansas City public and charter school 3rd graders read on grade level, and there is a 4X higher likelihood of dropping out of high school if a student can't read by 3rd grade. At Friday's meeting, we heard from Katie Lee, a Tutoring Facilitator with Lead to Read KC, about volunteering opportunities.

Today we welcomed Kathy Sudeikis as our program speaker. Kathy told us about some new travel safeguards to adopt (she has been a travel agent/advisor for 50 years). She also is Jason Sudeikis' mother, and she gave us a sneak preview of "Ted Lasso" Season 4, Episode 1, which was largely filmed in Kansas City. We look forward to its premier on August 5 to check out all of the KC "Easter Eggs". She also shared some stories of accompanying her famous son to "Big Slick" and the World Cup quarter final match. Fun stuff!
