The Fabric of Healing program will provide incarcerated women and those formerly incarcerated who are reintegrating into the community with the opportunity to express their experiences of trauma, recovery, and hope through individually painted quilt blocks that will be combined into a public work of art. The shared artistic expression will highlight resilience, belonging, and community connection. This project serves justice-involved women who are currently incarcerated in the Shawnee County Jail, as well as women who have been released and are working to change the trajectory of their lives through successful community reintegration.

🥳👏🏼 On Friday, August 7th, Michelle Kerr was awarded the Rotary Award for Excellence in Service to Humanity!! Since June of 2024, Michelle has provided Movement and Meditation classes to justice-involved women through the Rotary Intersection to Care (ITC) program at the Shawnee County Jail.

Movement and Meditation class addresses the need for healing, dignity, and emotional support among justice-involved women facing trauma, and instability. This program is aims to increase self worth, self esteem, and self awareness among the ladies who have participated.

The success of Rotary’s mission to make a positive, lasting difference in the world depends on a large network of people who put Service Above Self. That group includes people who are not Rotary members, but who support and extend our impact. Rotary International established the Rotary Award for Excellence in Service to Humanity as a way to recognize those nonmembers who have demonstrated exemplary humanitarian service through Rotary and in accordance with our ideals.

Congratulations, Michelle and thank you for pouring into our ladies!! 💖

🥳🎨 We are incredibly honored to be a recipient of ArtsConnect Topeka's TopArts 2026 Grant!! This funding will go towards 'The Fabric of Healing'. The Fabric of Healing program will provide incarcerated women and those formerly incarcerated who are reintegrating into the community with the opportunity to express their experiences of trauma, recovery, and hope through individually painted quilt blocks that will be combined into a public work of art. The shared artistic expression will highlight resilience, belonging, and community connection. This project serves justice-involved women who are currently incarcerated in the Shawnee County Jail, as well as women who have been released and are working to change the trajectory of their lives through successful community reintegration.

This project will be implemented through the Intersection to Care as a part of our trauma-informed art program!

💛💙 Please join us Monday at 12p via Zoom to hear from Shelley Ramos of the Shawnee County Health Department - SCHD. Shelley Ramos is Health Promotion Coordinator/Community Health Outreach and Planning at the Shawnee County Health Department. She brings a diverse professional background spanning more than 15 years in the financial industry as a senior branch manager/small business development and relationship manager, followed by leadership roles in the nonprofit sector including Topeka Civic Theatre and Academy and CASA of Shawnee County. Shelley’s transition into public health reflects her commitment to working directly with communities to improve health outcomes and advance equitable access to resources. In addition to her professional work, she is actively engaged in the community as a Big with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Kansas, and serves as Board Member, Secretary, and Box Office Manager for Shades of Theatre Company, Inc. She has been married for 26 years and is the proud mother of two adult daughters.
