Community Bird Walk & eBird Training Near the Proposed Monroe Township Data Center Site

Join Andy Dapkins (our fab guide from the Lemoyne bird walk) for a special community bird walk and eBird training session near the area of the proposed data center in Monroe Township.

This walk will help document the birdlife that uses habitats surrounding the proposed development area. Participants will learn how to use eBird, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's citizen-science platform, to record bird observations that contribute to conservation research and decision-making.

The bird observations collected during this event will be included with an opposition letter from the Appalachian Audubon Society to Monroe Township officials as part of the effort to ensure that the potential impacts of the proposed data center on local wildlife are fully considered.

Whether you're an experienced birder or a complete beginner, you're welcome to join us. Andy will provide guidance on bird identification and using eBird, making this a great opportunity to learn while contributing valuable conservation data.

Saturday, June 13th @ 9-11am

Cope Circle, 2455 Cope Dr, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, United States

Please bring binoculars if you have them, comfortable walking shoes, water, and a smartphone with the eBird app installed if possible.

Every observation helps build a clearer picture of the ecological value of this area. Please share with friends, neighbors, birders, and anyone who cares about protecting Monroe Township's natural resources.

We're excited to highlight another property in Lemoyne that has been recognized as a Bird-Friendly Habitat through the Bird Habitat Recognition Program offered by the PA Audubon Council in partnership with local Audubon chapters and Bird Town PA! If you've had your property designated through the program, we'd love to hear about it and celebrate your efforts as well.

Lemoyne Bird Town Committee member Seandor Shenoy recently had his property near Negley Park recognized by the program. His yard features native trees, pollinator-friendly plants, a birdbath, and multiple brush/log piles that provide valuable habitat for wildlife.

Brush piles are an important but often overlooked habitat feature. They offer shelter and nesting sites for birds, provide cover for small mammals and reptiles, and create habitat for insects that serve as a vital food source for many wildlife species. By incorporating these natural elements into their landscapes, homeowners can help support a healthier and more diverse local ecosystem.

Your yard, garden, or even balcony can provide essential habitat for birds wherever you are in Pennsylvania! By creating a bird-friendly space and applying for the Bird Habitat Recognition Program, you'll help support local wildlife and receive an official yard sign recognizing your efforts.

To qualify, your property should include:
🫐 Food (native plants, seeds, berries, feeders)
💧 Water (birdbath, fountain, rain garden, etc.)
🌳 Shelter (shrubs, brush piles, dense plantings)
🪺 Nesting Areas (trees, shrubs, or nest boxes)

Why participate? You'll help birds thrive, beautify your property with native plants, and become part of a growing community making a positive environmental impact in your town.

Preview of habitat requirements and application information can be found in the comments.

Lemoyne Bird Town volunteers helped the Borough of Lemoyne, PA, plant a variety of pollinator-friendly flowers and plants in the 21 large concrete pollinator pots located along Market Street (19 pots) and near Borough buildings on Saturday!

These beautiful plantings were chosen to provide food and habitat for bees, butterflies, and birds throughout the growing season while adding color and beauty to our community.

We hope you enjoy them this summer as they bloom!

Thank you to everyone who volunteered!

Calling All Young Nature Lovers! 🌿

Did you know that birding is one of the fastest-growing outdoor hobbies and it's perfect for kids and teens?

The South Central Pennsylvania Young Birders Club, a program of the Appalachian Audubon Society, is welcoming young people ages 8–18 who are curious about birds, wildlife, and the natural world. Through monthly meetings, field trips, and hands-on learning, participants can build bird identification skills, make new friends, and explore Pennsylvania's amazing outdoors.

Why is birding great for kids?
• Encourages time outdoors and physical activity
• Builds observation, patience, and critical thinking skills
• Inspires a lifelong appreciation for nature and conservation
• Supports mental wellness by reducing stress and increasing mindfulness
• Creates opportunities for friendship and community with other young nature enthusiasts
• Can be enjoyed anywhere, from backyards and parks to nature preserves

Whether your child is already passionate about birds or just beginning to explore nature, the South Central Pennsylvania Young Birders Club offers a fun and welcoming place to learn and grow.

📅 Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month from 6:30–7:30 PM
📍 Christ Presbyterian Church, Camp Hill, PA
