SWVA Works is our team that provides employment and training services through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). We serve Lee, Scott, Wise, Dickenson, Russell, Tazewell, and Buchanan counties, as well as the City of Norton.

Instead of asking people to travel to us, we’re bringing workforce services into local communities, connecting individuals with employment resources, career guidance, training information, and other workforce supports that can help them take their next step.

Climbing Higher: Zac’s Path to a Career as a Lineman

When Zac, a graduate of Honaker High School, connected with Lisa Hubbard at SWVA Works, he was looking for more than just a job; he wanted to find a career with a future.

After enrolling in WIOA and discussing his interests and career goals, Zac decided that becoming a power lineman was the right path for him. He entered the lineman program at Mountain Empire Community College (MECC), where WIOA helped provide the support he needed to successfully complete his training.

Because Zac was not working while attending the program, supportive services helped offset transportation costs so he could get to training. WIOA also assisted with work-related items, including the boots and bibs required for the program.

Zac worked hard throughout his time at MECC and earned both his CDL and lineman certification, which are important credentials that prepared him to enter the workforce and pursue a career in the field he had chosen.

When asked what the program did for him, Zac said:

“They helped put me through college so I could get the training and experience I needed for this line of work. They also helped me find a job that relates directly to what I went to college for.”

Zac’s involvement went beyond the classroom. He was also an active participant in Work Readiness Leadership Development activities, regularly taking part in different activities and helping with community events.

Zac’s journey shows what can happen when determination is matched with the right training, resources, and support. He came to SWVA Works looking for a career path and left with the education, credentials, experience, and connections to begin building his future as a power lineman.
