The Tomato Girls caught the transport van to the rescue yesterday, and we pulled these little fluffers from another colony. Mom is now spayed and probably enjoying her first good night's sleep in a month!

Meet The Oranges. Five boys! All chaos.

Hamlin, Valencia (Val), Clementine (Clem), Tango, and Tangelo.

Sadly, they didn't make the transport with The Tomato Girls, but fingers crossed they get a rescue placement next week.

Happy Ginger Cat Appreciation Day! 🧑

Meet our two orange boys.

Sam Lucky came with my meal β€” that first photo is him in the McDonald's parking lot, the night we picked him up. Today? He reminds us when it's bedtime and is king of the king sized bed.

Buddy Love rescued himself. True to his name, he strolled into our yard, hopped into my lap, and sweet-talked Chris into holding the door β€” then moved right in. That white "mustache" in his photos? Sour cream. Zero remorse.

Two very different roads to the same home. And that's the whole truth about ginger cats β€” about every community cat: whether you go get them or they come get you, they all just need one person to open a door.

That's the job of CLAWS β€” being that person for the cats nobody else shows up for. It's vet bills, food, and a hundred little emergencies, mostly on money we don't have. So on the one day the whole world is loving on orange cats, we're asking you to help us take care of the community cats that aren't so lucky and loved.

Any amount helps. Truly. 🧑

🐾 Welcome to LCCPR! 🐾

So, what exactly is LCCPR?

LCCPR stands for Lee County Cat Protection & Rescue, a Lee County chapter of PAWS of SWVA created to help protect and improve the lives of cats throughout our community.

Our goals include:

🐱 Rescuing cats in need
βœ‚οΈ Promoting spay and neuter efforts
🐾 Supporting feral TNR and colony care
❀️ Connecting cats and their people with helpful resources
🏑 Working toward safe foster care, treatment and adoption opportunities

We want to be completely transparent: we are still in the very early stages of building LCCPR. Before we can begin taking cats into our care, we need volunteers, foster homes, community partners, sponsors and plenty of helping hands!

Although we are not accepting cats at this time, we will offer as much guidance and support as we possibly can while we build the network needed to serve Lee County safely and responsibly.

Please follow our page, share it with your friends and invite anyone who may want to volunteer or support our mission. Every strong rescue begins with a community willing to careβ€”and we’re excited to build this one together! πŸΎπŸ’š

Mater Girls Happy Tummy Update! Nothing like a tummy full of warm formula to make you feel better. After a bath to remove fleas (thankfully there weren't many), supervised snuggle time with the magic warm (electric throw), these little girls weren't shy about diving into their first meal with us. From formula to wet food, and a combination platter...Brandy and Goldie are happy and eating well.

First vet visit will be scheduled in a few days. Any help is appreciated.

πŸ“Œ Where to Actually Get Help: Local Spay/Neuter & Resources

We get asked all the time where to turn for cats, so we're keeping it pinned right here. CLAWS is a trap-neuter-return group β€” not a rescue or shelter β€” but these are the real, local resources we point people to. Save it. Share it. Preventing the next litter is the most powerful thing any of us can do.

🏠 Rescues (Not Local β€” But Worth a Call)

We don't have a rescue in our county, and the ones that exist stay full. These are farther out, but they take calls and you can always ask if they have space:

Homeward Trails Animal Rescue β€” homewardtrails.org
Friends of Homeless Animals β€” foha.org
Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation β€” lostdogrescue.org

One honest note: please call ahead before assuming anyone has room. Space is tight everywhere right now β€” which is exactly why fixing your own animals, and any outdoor cats you feed, matters so much.

This morning, one of our caregivers walked up on a tomato box sitting at one of our colonies. The lid had been knocked off. There was a p*e pad inside. And there were two kittens β€” barely weaned, big enough to climb out β€” running loose around it. Two that we could see. We have no way of knowing if there were more.

Somebody drove to a known colony and left babies in a produce box like a package on a porch.

Meet Brandywine and Sungold β€” named, of course, after the box they came in.

We took them. Of course we took them. You cannot leave kittens loose at a colony and drive away β€” not with predators and grown cats who don't know them. But we need you to hear what that moment really was: not a rescue. It only ended okay because someone happened to find them in time.

So let's talk plainly, because we love this community and we are worn all the way down.

CLAWS is NOT a RESCUE!
We are not a shelter. We don't have a building, paid staff, or open kennels. Right now, CLAWS is two people β€” me and Chris β€” keeping community cats alive through trap-neuter-return and supporting the people already caring for them.

That means we are not the place to call when:
β€’ you found kittens under your porch
β€’ a stray showed up and won't leave
β€’ the cats you started feeding have become a colony of their
own
β€’ someone you know wants to "get rid of" some cats

We wish we could be everything for every cat. We can't. And every time we get pulled into a situation we aren't built for, it takes us away from the work that no one else out here is doing.

And here's the part people don't want to hear: right now, there is nowhere for these kittens to go. The rescues are full β€” completely full. When someone dumps kittens at a colony, they are not handing them to a safety net. There is no net. There's just us β€” two tired people and a vet bill.

And it is a bill. These two will cost us at least $600 to vet, before we count food and other supplies. CLAWS does not have that money sitting there. We will find it, because we always do β€” but we shouldn't have to, for kittens someone chose to abandon.

To whoever left them: we hope you see this. Those are your kittens in these photos. They are safe now because of a volunteer. If you have a shred of care for them, the right thing to do now is help pay for the care they need: givebutter.com/standinthegap

And know this: dumping an animal in Virginia is a crime β€” a Class 1 misdemeanor under state law (Β§ 3.2-6504).

To everyone else: if you truly want to help cats, stop the next litter before it starts. Get your own animals fixed. Don't feed outdoor cats unless you have a plan to get them fixed too β€” feeding without fixing is exactly how a tomato box full of kittens shows up six months later. We've pinned a post with information for spay/neuter resources and rescues. That is the best and most real help we can point you to.

A box at a colony is not a safety net. Prevention is.

Before you scroll on: how many times have you seen one of our posts and thought "someone should do something"?

You're the someone. And here's the something β€” because this does not have to keep happening.

There are more than 20,000 adults in Russell County. If every one of us gave a single dollar, that's $20,000 β€” enough to get nearly every cat and kitten people keep calling us about spayed, neutered, and done. Not rescued after the fact. Prevented. The tomato boxes, the porch litters, the colonies that keep growing β€” that is how they stop.

One dollar. That's the whole ask. We can't fix this alone β€” but together, we actually could.
