Happiest two days after Mother’s Day lovelies!

When I introduced myself a few weeks ago, I shared one of my favorite mantras: to have a village, you have to be a villager. When I joined BBM years ago, I came in searching for that village. I was the first of my friends to have kids, and I remember feeling like I was navigating my motherhood journey alone. I also remember sitting in my first few BBM meetings thinking, welp...where is it...where's the community?

Thankfully, what I eventually realized is that a village doesn’t just fall into your lap. Your hopes, your dreams, and your prayers for connection all require action. So, I kept showing up: kickoffs, meetings, the Mom's Night Out. Each time I met more moms, was a little less nervous & a little more vulnerable - piece by piece I started to lay the foundation to my BBM village. I then moved from showing up to serving: from table leading and co-leading to Bright Futures and sitting on the Mom Panel for our favorite meeting. With every volunteer role, my village grew.

I can honestly say today that the village I was seeking is no longer just in B252 for me. It shows up in small ways like the grocery store, the park, church, and it shows up in big ways like when my husband was out of work for 10 months in 2023 to 2024. I am met with community because I chose to stop simply looking for a village and started being a villager. My hope is that you're able to find at least a portion of your village in BBM too. If you're ready to jump in, registration for next year's groups are live & we have a group for every mom. Ready to be a villager?

Towards the end of last week, I went to the zoo with a couple friends for the first time in a while. Our older kids are all in full-time school and we each had our youngest with us. I was running earlier than I had anticipated that morning and in the first few minutes of the drive I was thinking about how much easier it was to have my 4 year old with me than when I had gone to the zoo with my kids when they were younger, and certainly easier than when they were babies. It doesn't seem that long ago that I had a double stroller, diapers, wipes, and all kinds of accessories to make it through an outing. I was feeling really good about how seamless it was leaving the house until I realized we hadn’t put on my daughter’s jacket and I had also forgotten our sunscreen. Also, I forgot I was running on empty and knew I had to get gas.

So! After retrieving our items and filling up the tank, we made it to the zoo (along with seemingly all of the field trip buses from the entire KC metro) and we had a wonderful day exploring! It made me laugh that even though I was in an “easier” stage of parenting, we are always less than perfect. I also took a lot of the day reflecting on how grown up my daughter seemed. She was checking the map constantly, begging to take pictures on my phone, and directing my friend’s kids when it was time to leave an exhibit. We ended up spending most of the day with the animals and when we got home, we found that I had left the garage door open the whole time! Nothing like feeling like you have it all together and then being met with your mistakes.

Her preschool graduation is coming up and it will be quite the transition for our family. I’m trying to savor the slower weekdays we have right now, documenting her "little kid” phrases and thoughts, and allowing her the space for independence and growth. While I face preschool graduation, I know so many of you are already in the middle of high school and college graduations, bringing home newborns, welcoming grandbabies, or prepping to be empty nesters.

Something about motherhood is always changing, in obvious ways like the milestones listed above, and in less obvious ways, such as not knowing the last time you needed to apply ni**le cream, not having to nag your kids to take a bath, or not having to remind them to keep their phone charged before they leave the house for a night out with friends. Our kids are constantly growing, changing, and so are we! It’s a great reminder of why having a support system in place, like BBM, can help us stay focused on the big picture and share in each other’s joys, mistakes, and life experiences.

We want to extend a huge thank you to all of you who volunteered during the Bright Futures event on April 11th - it was a resounding success! The event was able to serve approximately 150 kids, which is an incredible impact. As you know, BBM was able to provide a hygiene store at the church so the participants did not need to use their budget for essentials such as hair care, body wash, and the like. We’ve included some photos of what BBM provided - thank you very much for your contributions!

An extra thank you to our mission leads, Audra Morris and Kerry Johnston, for organizing, facilitating, and serving in this way. We also want to thank each group’s mission lead for supporting this important event.

A dear friend gave me a sourdough starter in November. To say I am obsessed is an understatement. I made bread for a Christmas gift exchange (along with a tea towel, food scale and her own starter). My friend Laura took it home. That afternoon, she received the expected call that her grandmother had gone home to Jesus. The family sat together and shared the random loaf of bread Laura had received earlier in the day.

With my heart was overflowing with gratitude to have been part of their healing, I shared the story at dinner that night. I explained that Laura had taken home the bread but her grandma passed away. Before I could finish the story, Molly, our nine year old, asked in earnest “oh no! Was it the bread!?” As in…did my baking end Laura’s grandmother’s life!! Thanks, Molly. Thanks a lot.

Jesus said “I am the bread of life.” And I think of that every time my house smells of baking bread. I’ve given away nearly ten starters from the jar someone gave to me. That’s how God works. We give a little bit of delicious goodness every time we show kindness, offer grace, and love our neighbor. May your proverbial sourdough starter be bubbly and plentiful.

BBM love.
