In movie makers today we had a special guest stop by. Jack Johnson, illustrator of The Goonies, Big Fish, Jurassic Park 3, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissor hands. He saw that there was a movie making class and he stopped by to say hi yesterday, then came back today with a bunch of his drawings from movies and gave a talk about how movies are made! So cool to see people take the time to give back. Thanks

STEM Activity

Programming is a critical 21st century skill. This STEM activity will guide students through basic programming sequencing. It does a great job of teaching students programming logic and introducing them to key programming vocabulary. We have listed an activity that goes with the hour of code initiative.

STEM Activity

One of the basic skills students can learn is typing. No matter what profession a student chooses typing will be a part of their success. Many students will say, "I already know how to type." What professionals are seeing in the field is that students say they know how to type and then we see them pointing and pecking around the keyboard. The key is to get students motivated to type and work on the skill. Here are some resources that can do that. These sites contain typing lessons and games that can enterTRAIN students..

1. www.typing.com this is a nice free site that will take them through typing lessons.
2. https://www.typing.com/student/games Here is a list of games.
* Some ideas for this to create competition.
* Create a high score table at home. Winner for the week gets out of a chore. Even parents can compete.
3. https://www.nitrotype.com is a competitive car racing typing game.
* Some ideas for this to create a competition
* Post high scores @ YTI FB
* Race against others- Post usernames to race others.

Nitro Type pits players against each other in a competitive real time typing race.

STEM Activity

Digital Photography is a fun activities and is a great way for students to get out, enjoy and appreciate the world around them. The old cliche is that a picture is worth a thousand words. Here are some photos that you can have kids go out and take. They can be taken with an actual camera or with a phone or tablet.

1. Self Portrait-Something that represents you.
2. Something in nature.
3. Pattern Photo.- Naturally occurring
4. Close-up of nature-Interesting perspective
5. Landscape photo
6. Portrait photo-Don’t want to be in the photo take one of your pets.
7. Something Funny
8. Something set up-Can use stuffed animals or lego characters and set up a scene and take a photo.

When the students are finished taking the photos, they can share those photos with you in multiple ways.
** Insert photos into a word document- You could have them type a short explanation of what the photo means to them.
** Put them together in a slide presentation
** Put them together in a movie making program like iMovie and set them to music.
***This project will take 1-2 hours and teaches students about photography, file management and digital storytelling.
