Can you still be being abused even if it doesn't happen all the time? Even if there are good days? YES. That's how the cycle of abuse works, and that's why abuse can feel so confusing sometimes.

In the HONEYMOON phase, everything is wonderful. You feel special and your partner may buy you gifts or compliment you.

In the PLEASANT phase, everything is fine. It may not be the constant lovebombing of the honeymoon phase, but there are no big problems.

In the TENSION phase, things are going downhill. You walk on eggshells because you know any little thing could set off your partner. Your focus turns from love and fun to preventing an explosion.

In the ABUSE phase, your partner's behavior turns from just making you nervous to actively abusing you. It may be physical, emotional, verbal, sexual, financial, reproductive, or other kinds of abuse. I can be one explosive incident or ongoing for days, weeks, even months.

In the REMORSE phase, your partner denies, minimizes, and justifies the abuse. They may blame you, work, a friend or family member, or other outside factors — anything to avoid calling it what it is. They may apologize and promise it will never happen again, they'll make it up to you...
..which leads back to the HONEYMOON phase.

It can take a long time to fully believe this — especially when the person who hurt you worked hard to convince you otherwise.

So we want to say it plainly: What happened to you is not your fault. It was never your fault. Not even a little.

The responsibility belongs entirely to the person who chose to hurt you. You don't have to carry it anymore.

When you're ready to talk, we're here. Our advocates will listen, believe you, and help you take the next step — whatever that looks like for you.

Your healing journey belongs to you.

Maybe you need to talk about what happened.

Maybe you need to not talk about it for a while.

Maybe you need practical help first — safety, housing, legal support — before you can even think about the emotional work.

Maybe you need counseling.

Maybe you need community.

All of that is okay. There's no timeline, no checklist, no right or wrong way to do this. Our advocates will meet you where you are and support the path that makes sense for you.

Abuse has patterns of power and control, and knowing the patterns keeps you safer. Abusers:
- Intimidate their victim
- Humiliate, neg, and shame their victim
- Isolate their victims
- Minimize and deny their behavior
- Blame their victim
- Use children to manipulate their victim
- Use privilege to control their victim
- Control their victim's money
- Use coercion and threats to manipulate their victim

If you recognize any of the signs of power and control in your relationship, ALC is here to help. Call 719-486-3530 and press 1 to speak with one of our specially trained advocates. We'll help you figure out what's happening with your partner, make a plan to stay safe, and explore your next steps.

We're here to support you 24/7/365.
Totally free, totally confidential.

Reaching out after abuse or assault takes courage. You might worry about not being believed, about what happens next, or about whether your situation is "bad enough" to ask for help.

We've been supporting survivors for over 40 years, so believe us when we say this: If you're even THINKING about asking for help, it's "bad enough," every single time.

Picking up the phone and calling our crisis line is one of the bravest things you can do for yourself. On the other end, you'll find a trained advocate who will listen, believe you, and help you explore your options — without pressure and without judgment.

You don't have to go through this alone. 719-486-3530 (press 1 for the crisis line)

RELATIONSHIPS CAN BE DEFINED IN MANY WAYS. Whether serious, casual, a friendship, or family, all relationships deserve to be healthy. But how do you know if your relationship is healthy?

A helpful place to start is by thinking about relationships existing on a spectrum – with healthy on one end, abusive on the other end, and unhealthy somewhere in the middle.

Example:
🟢 In HEALTHY relationships, partners have clear and regular communication, where they talk openly about problems, listen to each other, and respect each other's opinions.

🟡 In UNHEALTHY relationships, partners don't communicate. When problems come up, you fight or don't discuss them at all.

🔴 In ABUSIVE relationships, a partner communicates in a way that's hurtful, threatening, insulting, or demeaning.

If you need help navigating your relationship, we're here for you. Call 719-486-3530 and press 1 to speak with one of our specially trained advocates. We'll listen to you, believe you, and help you figure out your next step. Available 247, free, confidential.
