๐Ÿ™Œ Collaboration is conservation in action.

Today we had the pleasure of hanging out with an incredible group of regional conservation leaders at St. Xavier Nature Preserve, and we hope the group will continue to expand! We were grateful to spend time with friends from Allegheny Land Trust, Westmoreland Conservancy, Indiana County Conservation District, Hollow Oak Land Trust, Conemaugh Valley Conservancy , Murrysville Area Watershed Association, and Westmoreland Conservation District.

While each organization serves a unique role, we share a common goal: protecting the natural resources, land, waterways, wildlife habitat, and special places that we all share. We left inspired by the knowledge and dedication represented around this treeโ€”and excited about the possibilities for future collaboration.

Here's to working together to conserve more land, steward it well, and ensure future generations can enjoy the benefits of our shared landscapes that know no boundaries. ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ’š

If your organization is interested in joining the conversation, please reach out!

๐ŸŒณEvery protected acre has a story.

Behind every conserved property are often years of conversations with landowners, site visits, surveys, legal review, title work, fundraising, stewardship planning, and more.

Protecting land forever requires far more than simply purchasing a property or accepting a donation. Behind the scenes are years of planning and partnership work.

While much of this work happens out of public view, its impact is experienced for generations.

This is what land protection looks like.

We Love Our Hunters! ๐ŸฆŒ๐ŸŒฒ

Hunting and conservation go hand in hand. Through wildlife management, hunters play a critical role in preserving habitats and maintaining balanced ecosystems in the stewardship of the lands we all enjoy. Westmoreland Land Trust hunters volunteer their time helping with trail maintenance, mowing, groundskeeping, facility improvements, committee service, and much more.

This spring alone, our hunting community has contributed more than 250 volunteer hours to support our preserves. Their dedication helps us care for these special places while stretching our resources.

Hunting on Westmoreland Land Trust properties requires written permission through our annual permit program. To protect wildlife, habitat, and the visitor experience, permits are limited and issued based on property-specific management needs.

This summer, we'll be launching a "We Love Our Hunters" spotlight series to recognize the volunteers who help keep the Land Trust running. Stay tuned as we feature the faces of the people whose time, talents, and commitment make a lasting impact on our preserves.
Thank you to our hunters for all you do! ๐Ÿงก๐ŸŒฟ

Today, we are thanking Daniel Cowell, a local hunter and Lead Volunteer Steward at Ackermann Nature Preserve. Thank you, Daniel, for dedicating countless hours with your family to trail maintenance, invasives management, and so much more. We appreciate all that you do!

๐ŸŒณ A walk through The Grove is a walk through history.

Towering above the landscape at St. Xavier Nature Preserve is The Grove - a remarkable collection of trees, many approaching 200 years of age. These giants are more than just beautiful; they tell the story of a place where generations have left their mark.

For decades, graduating classes of St. Xavier Academy planted a different species of tree, creating a living legacy that still thrives today. Every tree in The Grove has been mapped and identified, making it a unique outdoor classroom and a testament to the diversity of our region's forests.

Whether you're a tree enthusiast, history buff, or simply looking for a peaceful place to walk, The Grove offers something special. Drop in for a historical tour of the grounds or set up an appointment.

Come discover the history and incredible diversity of this one-of-a-kind landscape. ๐ŸŒณ

๐Ÿฆ This Is What Habitat Protection Looks Like.

This photo was taken inside the historic barn at Meadowlark Nature & Art Park in May and captures one of the barn swallows from the large colony that returns each spring to nest and raise its young here.

When people think about land conservation, they often picture forests, streams, and scenic vistas. But conservation is also about protecting the places wildlife depend on every dayโ€”including barns, fields, meadows, and the habitats that support entire breeding colonies, like our resident big brown bats and barn swallows.

Barn swallows have nested alongside people for generations, building mud nests inside barns and other structures where they can safely raise their young. As these places continue to disappear, suitable nesting habitat becomes increasingly difficult to find. That's why protecting places like Meadowlark matters. Conserved lands don't just benefit peopleโ€”they provide essential habitat for wildlife.

A special thank you to PixCams for partnering with us to bring this story to life through the WLT Barn Swallow Nest Cam. Their support allows people near and far to experience the wonder of these birds and gain a deeper appreciation of them.
