Essential Halloween safety tips for cats. Focus on keeping your feline safe, calm, and healthy during the spooky season:
• Keep Cats Indoors: Dark evenings bring heavy foot traffic, loud noises, and fireworks. Keep all cats—especially Black Cats—safely inside to protect them from roads, stress, and potential cruelty. Some animal shelters also temporarily pause or restrict black cat adoptions around Halloween for their safety.
• Watch Out for Toxic Treats: Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which are highly toxic to cats. Artificial sweeteners like Xylitol (found in many candies and gums) are also extremely dangerous. Keep all candy bowls, wrappers, and baked goods well out of reach.
• Secure the Front Door: Constant trick-or-treaters mean opened doors and bustling guests. Consider placing your cat in a quiet, comfortable indoor room with a litter box and water so they don't make a sudden escape.
• Be Careful with Costumes: If you dress up your cat, ensure the outfit doesn't restrict their breathing, vision, or movement. If your cat acts stressed or unhappy, skip the costume.
• Check Decorations: Keep lit candles (like jack-o'-lanterns), glow sticks, and dangling electrical cords safely away from curious paws
