Sergeant Adam Lee, a combat medic with the Montana National Guard, was off duty and volunteering as a Life Flight paramedic when two hikers fell about 800 feet from a trail near Idyllwild, California.

Subfreezing temperatures and an approaching winter storm kept helicopters from reaching the area, so Lee and a rescue team went in on foot. Some members were forced to turn back as conditions worsened. Lee rappelled into the fall zone in darkness and found both hikers with facial, pelvic and spinal fractures, along with frostbite and severe hypothermia after 12 hours exposed to the elements without proper gear.

He stabilized them with warm IV fluids and core rewarming techniques, then stayed with them for more than 48 hours, using his own body to shield them from falling ice and rock. As other rescuers began showing signs of exhaustion and hypothermia, Lee took on their duties so the operation could continue, keeping both hikers alive until they could finally be evacuated.

He was awarded the Soldier's Medal, the Army's highest honor for noncombat heroism, on August 16 in Belgrade, Montana. "Sergeant Lee, you are the standard," said Brig. Gen. Trenton Gibson while presenting the award.

Veterans should never give up their voice simply because someone predicts what VA might do.

The regulatory process gives veterans the power to challenge bad policy before it becomes final.

Congress shouldn’t silence that voice by prematurely writing a disputed proposal into law.

Veterans’ voices have power. Let’s use them.
