It’s important for drivers, Heinold said, to remember “to exercise patience” while driving on the roadways. Per state law, drivers are obligated to “provide a minimum distance of three feet when overtaking a person riding a bicycle.”
Bicyclists, for safety, are “encouraged to ride with the flow of automobile traffic,” and should be considered, and treated, as if they were like any other driver on the road, and cyclists should follow all traffic laws and practice accurate signaling when riding.
“I encourage all residents and visitors to remember to wear a helmet. It’s not required, but it’s a great tool to help keep people safe,” he said.
“And also remember to use a front and rear light if riding in the dark. Happy bike month and safe travels,” he added.
On Saturday, May 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Heinold, as part of the Kiwanis Club of La Porte’s pop picnic in Koomler Park, will be teaching bicycle safety and maneuvering to children. The event will have “free food, free helmets – as long as they last – and free little blinky lights as well.”
Then on Sunday, May 17th is the Orchard Country Bicycle Tour from 7 am to Noon with the start at the La Porte County Fairgrounds. Onsite registration is available on Sunday!
Happy pedaling!!
