One of the concluding events of Lancaster Water Week was the Rally for the River and Conestoga Cleanup – and what better way is there to wrap up the week than by taking action together to clean up our River of the Year? 💪💧 After gathering beside the Conestoga at Lancaster County Central Park, participants headed out to seven different cleanup sites to collect and properly dispose of trash along the river.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this event, which has an immediate positive impact for our waterways! Let's keep the momentum going for clean streams and rivers all year long!

The Conestoga Cleanup is organized by the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, and cleanup site hosts included the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association, SoWe, Lancaster PA Tourism Alliance, Conestoga River Club, Partners for Environmental Stewardship, Lancaster Conservancy, and Eurofins.

The 10th annual Lancaster Water Week was an incredible celebration of our streams and rivers and the steps we can take to care for them. We paddled, hiked, creek stomped, biked, read, watched films, learned about our watersheds, and connected with our waterways and with one another.

Since 2017, Lancaster Water Week has been bringing partners and community members together around our streams and rivers, raising awareness and building the momentum needed to restore them to thriving wildlife habitats and places for recreation. 🐟🛶

The Conestoga River is at the heart of Lancaster County's natural landscape, history, and community. It is a place of exploration, recreation, peace, and connection. It provides habitat for wildlife. It motivates us to take action to care for this special and important waterway. It's also Pennsylvania's 2026 River of the Year!

Protecting our waterways starts with you! 💧

Everyone can play a role in restoring our streams and rivers, and it starts right in your own backyard. Each of us lives within a watershed, or an area of land where all water drains to a single water body, like a creek or stream. As water travels over the land, it can pick up pollutants like fertilizers, pesticides, pet waste, and soil, and carry them into our streams. What you do on land directly impacts the health of the cricks and creeks in your watershed.

The first step to supporting healthy waterways is learning which watershed you live in! Once you've identified your watershed, you can help take care of it by replacing lawn with native plant species to help capture polluted stormwater runoff, reconsidering things you do in your daily life that might impact nearby waterways, and getting outside to get to know your local streams.
