On February 14, 2026, Seton Hall player Justin Ford suffered a freak injury after hitting a home run; while the injury was severe, rules allow a substitute to finish the trot as a formality because the ball is dead once it leaves the park.

Under NCAA Rules, if a batter-runner hits a home run but is injured while running the bases, he can be substituted for to complete the play.

According to the 2025 and 2026 interpretations and established baseball logic:Dead Ball Substitution: A home run that leaves the field creates a dead ball situation. Substitutions are permitted at any time the ball is dead.

Completing the Award: If an accident to a runner prevents them from proceeding to a base they are entitled to (such as on a home run), a substitute runner is permitted to complete the play.

Mandatory Touch: The substitute must touch all remaining bases in the correct order to make the home run valid.

Evaluation Time: Teams are generally allowed time for a trainer or coach to evaluate the injury before a final substitution decision is made.
