WABSE-Washington Alliance of Black School Educators

WABSE-Washington Alliance of Black School Educators WABSE is a vehicle to your desire to help an African-American student who otherwise may not have an opportunity to pursue a college education.

Dedicated to an affirmation of the inherent worth, dignity and educability of African American people and an eradication of problems which stand as obstructions to quality education for all students and particularly African American students WABSE has an on-going GoFundMe Scholarship account.Through this account our goal is to give everyone an opportunity to support a deserving college bound high

school senior. Each year WABSE receives dozens of scholarship applications from deserving college bound high school seniors who ALL deserve an opportunity to receive a college degree. The WABSE scholarship committee would like to award EACH of these applicants a minimum $1,000 scholarship however our current budget only allows ONE so each year we regretfully turn away the applications of all but one deserving student. It is quite heartbreaking which is why we appeal to you, our allies in education, partners and friends to help support our heartfelt goal: EACH APPLICANT WHO MEETS THE WABSE SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA RECEIVES A WABSE SCHOLARSHIP! We ALL benefit from your tax deductible donation because we know a mind is a terrible thing to waste! On behalf of every WABSE Scholarship applicant, the board and the entire WABSE membership we THANK YOU for your generous offer TODAY! www.gofundme.com/WABSEScholarship

T.U.P.A.C. wants to thank all those that have given so much to us so far. Those that have donated countless hours of time, money, and gifts. Their new found talents and drive are only made possible because people like you care. Please continue to show your support and consider donating again today. Our upcoming event on the 9th is a perfect way to show your support with the purchase of tickets. If you prefer direct donation, please visit our gofundme page and share. From friend Anni Stedman:
This post, from childhood neighbor, Meg Galipault, deserves a read:

To those of you not in the education field, you may not understand a lot of the educational jargon and the foundation of the American education system. Having a school voucher system (proposed by Trump's Education secretary Betsy DeVos) doesn't just mean you can choose any school you want your kid to go to. It also means the public education program will be dismantled. Let me explain...
If your child has an IEP, frame it. Then kiss it good-bye.
If you have a job in special-education, meaning if you're a: special education teacher, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech pathologist, a para, or a teacher's aid, you're in the same boat.
If you are in ESL teacher, you'll go first.
House Bill 610 makes some large changes.
Inform yourselves.
This bill will effectively start the school voucher system to be used by children ages 5-17 and starts the defunding process of public schools.
The bill will eliminate the Elementary and Education Act of 1965, which is the nation's educational law that provides equal opportunity in education.
ESSA is a big comprehensive program that covers programs for struggling learners, advanced and gifted kids in AP classes, ESL classes, classes for minorities such as Native Americans, Rural Education, Education for the Homeless, School Safety (Gun-Free schools), Monitoring and Compliance, and Federal Accountability Programs. Yes, there are all of these programs happening in our education system, in addition to just academics.
The Bill also abolishes the Nutritional Act of 2012 (No Hungry Kids Act) which provides nutritional standards in school breakfast and lunch.
The bill has no wording whatsoever protecting Special Needs kids, no mention of IDEA, and FAPE.
Some things ESSA does for Children with Disabilities:
-Ensures access to the general education curriculum.
-Ensures access to accommodations on assessments.
-Ensures concepts of Universal Design for Learning.
-Includes provisions that require local education agencies to provide evidence-based interventions in schools with consistently underperforming subgroups.
-Requires states in Title I plans to address how they will improve conditions for learning including reducing incidents of bullying and harassment in schools, overuse of discipline practices and reduce the use of aversive behavioral interventions (such as restraints and seclusion).
Please call your representative and ask him/her to vote NO on House Bill 610 (HR 610) introduced by three Republican reps.
PLEASE copy and paste, don't just share. That limits it to friends we have in common. Thank you.

It is with a heavy heart that I post this announcement. Vickie Williams, the community icon and owner of L.E.M. , LIFE ENRICHMENT bookstore passed away on March 3, 2017. Vickie owned and operated the only Black bookstore in Washington State. Her books and artifacts increased the Black cultural literacy for many students and teachers. Her bookstore served as the "Town Hall" in the African American community. Click onto service details for dates and time of her visitation and Memorial Services. Vickie Williams will be greatly missed by members and friends of WABSE. Her legacy of literacy lives on forever!
