In 2016, our son Kalen passed away after being hit by a car while crossing the street to catch his school bus. Despite our heartache, we remained faithful and drew inspiration from Kalen's own words, which ultimately became the driving force behind the Blended Family Foundation. The Blended Family Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit organization based in central Florida, serving Polk, Osceola, and Hillsborough County. Our mission is to provide socks, shoes, and hygiene items through mobile emergency closets available at community resource locations. Additionally, we offer coaching and mentoring support to help families build strong and loving home environments. In the near future, we plan to expand our services by offering single-day and weekend getaways for family bonding, as well as respite retreats for grieving families.

A Young Decision. A Lifelong Impact.
2026 BFF Honors™ | Honoree Spotlight

Some children discover what they love. Others discover, remarkably early, that they have the authority to decide what they'll do with it.

Raised by a grandmother whose presence provided a foundation of love and encouragement, one young child discovered a gift that would eventually influence multiple generations.

A meaningful gift from his mother became an unexpected turning point. But what happened next revealed something even more extraordinary: a young boy who didn't wait for someone to teach him what he was determined to learn.

Through curiosity, persistence, and countless hours of independent practice, he began developing an ability that would eventually become much more than a personal accomplishment.

What makes his story remarkable isn't simply the talent that emerged. It's the personal authority that showed up long before the world realized what he would accomplish.

His grandmother helped shape the foundation. His mother provided an opportunity. But he made the decision to do something meaningful with what he'd been given. Self-discipline and an innate gifting changed everything.

As the years passed, that childhood determination grew into a lifelong commitment to creating opportunities for others. He understood that talent often exists long before opportunity arrives, and that sometimes all a young person needs is someone willing to provide those opportunities.

Today, his influence reaches beyond his own accomplishments. He has dedicated himself to helping young people recognize their abilities, develop confidence, and pursue possibilities they may not have considered for themselves.

Perhaps the most powerful part of his story is that a child who once received an opportunity grew into a man determined to create opportunities for others.

His journey reminds us that personal authority isn't reserved for adulthood. Sometimes it begins with a child who decides to learn, grow, and pursue something before anyone else fully understands what that decision may become.

Volunteers needed at our North Lakeland Hub!

We're getting our student hub ready and we need helping hands to make it happen.
Join us Tuesdays or Thursdays from 9:00 to 11:00 AM to unpack supplies, organize resources, and prepare the space.
