Meeting for Worship with Lake Forest Friends

Members and attenders in the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) gather in silence for meeting for worship. Friends believe that each individual can experience God without need of an intermediary. The Divine Spirit within each of us, the Inner Light, strengthened by communal worship, makes the meeting for worship deeply spiritual. This silence is no

t an end in itself. It is an opportunity during which we can open our hearts and minds to God. The silence may be broken occasionally when a worshiper feels divinely inspired to share with the meeting a deeply felt message. It may take the form of a quotation, prayer, or song; it may describe a practical experience; or contain an expression of mystical insight or faith. The silence and the messages are heard in a worshipful spirit. Friends are called to celebrate the presence of God in everyone. The Friends’ way of life, historically rooted in the teachings of Christ, emphasizes simplicity, humility and acceptance of all people, recognizing no boundaries of occupation, race, sexual orientation, or creed. We attempt to live our lives in a manner that takes away the occasion for conflict and war. We work to live in a manner that is in harmony with the natural world. We act in faith that something can and should be done to reduce suffering in this world. Friends believe our individual experiences of the Divine are reflected in our actions. Lake Forest Friends Meeting is open to all. Individuals in this meeting are inspired by a variety of faith traditions and a variety of personal spiritual journeys. We invite you to join us.

William Penn wrote two books of advice to his children, including this advice:
"So soon as you wake, retire your mind into a pure silence from all thoughts and ideas of worldly things, and in that frame wait upon GOD, to feel His good presence, to lift up your hearts to Him, and commit your whole self into his blessed care and protection.”

The Milwaukee Friends Meeting’s Newcomers Committee suggests a query on this same topic:
“How do you discern the difference between quiet and spiritual stillness?”

One of our young Friends needs to decide what stringed instrument to study, so other Friends brought their instruments for her to try out. This became an opportunity for several Friends to try something new after meeting for worship today. Hooray for music making!

Query for June:
In 1969, NYC Quakers provided first aid and sanctuary to protestors during and after the Stonewall uprising. Then during the planning of the first Pride march in 1970, parade organizers specifically asked Quakers to teach their march marshals nonviolent civil disobedience and de-escalation tactics. Quakers made history as the very first religious group to march in a gay pride parade, participating in the inaugural Christopher Street Liberation Day March in New York City on June 28, 1970.

Are you alert to practices here and throughout the world which discriminate against people on the basis of who or what they are or because of their beliefs? Bear witness to the humanity of all people, including those who break society’s conventions or its laws. Try to discern new growing points in social and economic life. Seek to understand the causes of injustice, social unrest and fear. Are you working to bring about a just and compassionate society which allows everyone to develop their capacities and fosters the desire to serve?
