🇺🇸 American Legion Membership Tip: How to Read a DD-214

Thinking about joining the American Legion or Auxiliary? Or helping someone else become a member? Knowing how to read a DD-214 is an important step in verifying membership eligibility!

When reviewing a DD-214, pay close attention to these key blocks:

- Block 1: Name
- Block 4: Branch of Service
- Block 6: Date of Rank
- Block 7: Citizenship
- Block 9: Date of Birth
- Block 13a: Character of Service (Discharge)
- Block 14: Date of Discharge

💡 Helpful Reminders:

- Search online for “How to Read a DD-214” for additional guidance.
- Auxiliary members no longer need an American Legion officer or Adjutant to sign off on Auxiliary membership applications.
- Veterans from earlier conflicts and wars may have original discharge papers instead of a DD-214.
- If you are unsure about a DD-214 or another discharge document, ask for assistance.
- We do not keep DD-214s or discharge documents on file. They are returned to the applicant or securely shredded when they are no longer needed.

Whether you are considering membership for yourself or helping someone else join, understanding the process can make taking that next step easier!

🇺🇸 REMEMBER: MEMBERSHIP IS EVERYBODY'S RESPONSIBILITY!

Let's continue welcoming eligible veterans and families into our American Legion family!
