🌟Announcement: DAR Outstanding Cadet Medal presented to Civil Air Patrol Cadet Captain Mileydi Jaynes🌟

On February 5, 2026, Mary Butler Chapter, DAR, Vice Regent Jo Ann Ford presented C/Capt Mileydi Jaynes with the DAR Outstanding Cadet Medal. This prestigious award is presented to a cadet who has demonstrated academic excellence, dependability, good character, adherence to military discipline, leadership, and a fundamental and patriotic understanding of the importance of cadet training.

C/Capt Jaynes, the daughter of an active-duty U.S. Army soldier, has turned a passion for aviation into remarkable leadership through Civil Air Patrol. C/Capt Jaynes joined CAP on her 12th birthday as a shy but dedicated cadet, but quickly grew in confidence, rising through the ranks and at age 14 became the first cadet officer in Hawk Squadron in more than 8 years.

Now a Cadet Captain and Amelia Earhart Award recipient - an honor earned by only about 5% of cadets - she serves as Cadet Commander, mentors peers, plans activities, teaches classes, and represented the state of NH in Washington, DC, at the National Legislative day.

An honor student at Winnisquam High School’s WICC Center for Design and Manufacturing, C/Capt Jaynes is active in student council, enjoys photography and arts and crafts in her free time, and is working toward her private pilot license at Laconia Flight Academy.

Cadet Captain Mileydi Jaynes is an inspiring example of service, excellence, and determination and it is an honor to recognize her with the DAR Outstanding Cadet Medal.

🇺🇸Congratulations, C/Capt Jaynes!🇺🇸

🇺🇸 Spotlight Saturday: Mary Butler Chapter Patriot Ancestors 🇺🇸

John Hart (c.1713–1779), New Jersey — farmer, judge, and “Honest John”.

✨ Delegate to the Second Continental Congress and signer of the Declaration of Independence; later Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly.
✨ During the British/Hessian push through NJ in Dec. 1776, he hid in the Sourland Mountains while his farm was raided.
✨ In June 1778 he opened his fields to Washington’s army as they marched toward the Battle of Monmouth.
✨ He is buried at the Old School Baptist Meeting House in Hopewell - on land he had earlier donated.

🚍 Historical Field Trip Friday 🚍

🇺🇸 Fort Constitution in New Castle, NH 🇺🇸 Standing guard at the mouth of the Piscataqua since colonial days. Once known as Fort William & Mary, this is where local patriots seized gunpowder in December 1774, months before Lexington & Concord. A bold early spark of the American Revolution! What to look for:

• Weathered granite walls and sweeping views of Portsmouth Harbor
• The nearby Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse (check tour days)
• Historic markers that bring the 1774 raids to life

Visitor tips: Wear sturdy shoes, bring a windbreaker (the breeze can be brisk!), and check access hours (the fort sits beside an active Coast Guard station.)

🇺🇸 Patriot Day — September 11 🕯️

Today we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, honor the courage of our first responders and service members, and hold close the families and survivors whose lives were forever changed.

Ideas for observing Patriot Day:
• Fly the U.S. flag at half-staff from sunrise to sunset.
• Pause for a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. ET.
• Take part in the National Day of Service and Remembrance - do a kind act, donate blood, thank a first responder, or support a neighbor in need.

🇺🇸 May we unite in remembrance, resilience, and service. 🇺🇸

🧬 Genealogy Tip Tuesday 🧬

Got a brick wall in your 🌳 Family Tree 🌳? Try the FAN Club method: research your ancestor’s Friends, Associates, and Neighbors. Quick steps:

• Read 2–3 census pages before/after your ancestor and note recurring surnames.
• Capture witnesses, godparents, and bondsmen from marriages, deeds, and probate records.
• Map who buys/sells land nearby; cluster moves often reveal maiden names and places of origin.
• Log every clue with a simple citation (Record type; Name; Place; Date; Repository/URL; Accessed date).

👇 Comment below, share a time you successfully broke down a genealogical brick wall! Maybe it will help someone else in their own research!

Want help? The Mary Butler Chapter has trained researchers ready to help break down those walls. For free. Send us a message if we can help!

🇺🇸 Star Spangled Sunday 🇺🇸

The giant garrison flag that inspired “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Fort McHenry had 15 stars and 15 stripes. In 1818, Congress returned the design to 13 stripes to honor the original colonies and set the rule to add a new star for each state every July 4th. ✨

DAR is proud to celebrate the Stars & Stripes!👇Comment below, where have you spotted Old Glory this week?

🇺🇸 Women of the Revolution Wednesday 🇺🇸

Deborah Sampson (1760–1827) disguised herself as “Robert Shurtliff” and served in the Continental Army in 1782-83. Wounded in action and honorably discharged, she later spoke publicly about service and perseverance and received a veteran’s pension. Her story reminds us that courage isn’t defined by expectations, it’s defined by action.
