The La Habra Woman’s Club is deeply saddened to hear about the fires affecting The Gary Center and Meals on Wheels. Both organizations are such important parts of our community, and our hearts are with their staff, volunteers, and everyone they serve during this difficult time. Please know that the La Habra Woman’s Club stands with you and is keeping you in our thoughts.

La Habra Woman’s Club will be putting together 24 desperately needed toiletry bags for women arriving at the shelter. They will include full size shampoo/conditioner, body wash, razors, tooth brushes, deodorant, feminine products and more. Thank you Carmen, for all of your hard work getting this set up. And to our members who will join her in 9/26 to put them together.

Day of Service Spotlight!

One project can make a lasting impact.

Last year, GFWC clubs across the Federation stepped up to support survivors and families through creative, compassionate service projects designed to meet local needs.

Understanding that the most dangerous time for a domestic
violence victim is the moment they decide to leave, GFWC McAlester
Fortnightly members collected and donated undergarments and toiletry items for the KI BOIS shelter so those arriving would hygiene necessities.

This project is just one example of how clubwomen are showing up to support domestic violence survivors.

What an experience.

🌽 From the Archives: Enjoying the Corn Festival

This picture from the Museum's collection captures festivalgoers enjoying the food that gave La Habra's Corn Festival its name.

Since its beginnings in 1949, generations of La Habra families have gathered for the festival. While plenty has changed over the years, some traditions have managed to stay the same.

As we count down to this year's Corn Festival, we're looking back at more than seven decades of memories from one of La Habra's longest running community traditions.

What is your favorite Corn Festival memory?

It's WHRC Wednesday! August is National Immunization Awareness Month, an annual observance to "raise awareness about the importance of vaccination across the lifespan to help protect communities from serious diseases" (Centers for Disease Control) and promote public health through immunization. For decades, GFWC and its members have taken part in vaccination drives, immunization educational campaigns, and more. Today, we are proud to call the United Nations Foundation's ShotAtLife an affiliate organization, and GFWC Resolution 170-190, "Preventable Diseases," codifies our support of the Centers for Disease Control's prevention recommendations for vaccinations.

📷 "Now that Saguache, Colorado, has a clinic, a doctor and a nurse, this Boy Scout does not have to travel many miles to get his polio shots," from "Ten Communities and How they Won," September 1960 issue of "General Federation Clubwoman." In the late 1950s, four women's clubs in Saguache joined forces to renovate the town clinic and bring medical care back to their community - allowing ready access to vital vaccinations for local kids.

Don't miss this one at Convention. 👇

The Women's History and Resource Center is debuting a new exhibit: "The Value of Club Work: Native American Clubs in the Early Federation." It highlights the Federated clubs organized by and for Native American women from the 1890s through the 1960s evaluating what they built, what they accomplished, and why GFWC mattered to them.

This is part of an ongoing research effort by WHRC to build a comprehensive database of Native American clubwomen and their contributions to our history. Important work we're proud to be sharing.

Can't make it to Convention this year? No worries — we'll be sharing these stories on the "WHRC: From the Archives" blog later this summer. Stay tuned!
