Fun on the outside, serious about animals on the inside. Zoo Knoxville is committed to being part of the solution to save species from extinction, both locally and globally. Zoo Knoxville works with other zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) on a collective Species Survival Plan for all animals that live in AZA-accredited zoos in North America. Working together, we can maintain a healthy, genetically diverse population in zoos to ensure we don’t lose animals to extinction when wild populations are in peril. Zoo Knoxville is also involved with conservation work in the field, with award-winning recognition for our efforts to save East Tennessee’s endangered bog turtle and ongoing research with native hellbender and mudpuppy salamanders. Our staff members travel to far-flung places like the Komodo Islands, Madagascar and Indonesia to study animals in their native habitats. Every guest that visits Zoo Knoxville also helps save wildlife and wild places. The “Quarters for Conservation” program gives 25 cents of every zoo ticket sold to on-going conservation programs around the globe.

🎶 Happy International Gibbon Day from Georgie and Maylay!

These two LOVE to sing together! 🎤 Both have their own unique voices, and if you've ever visited Zoo Knoxville, there's a good chance you've heard their beautiful duets echoing through the zoo!

In the wild, gibbons use their powerful songs to communicate with one another, strengthen their bonds and defend their territories.

Sadly, gibbons are among the most threatened primates in the world. Habitat loss, deforestation and illegal wildlife trafficking are putting their future at risk. Many gibbon species are endangered or critically endangered.

By caring for Georgie and Maylay and supporting conservation efforts, we're helping raise awareness about these incredible animals and the importance of protecting the forests they call home. 💚

🦥 Happy International Sloth Day!

Today, we're hanging out with two of our three sloths here at Zoo Knoxville! Meet Cosmo and Wanda, our Hoffmann's two-toed sloths!

These slow-moving mammals are native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, where they spend nearly their entire lives in the trees. Sloths are arboreal, meaning they're specially adapted for life in the treetops. Their long, curved claws allow them to hang upside down while eating, resting and even sleeping!

In the wild, Hoffmann's two-toed sloths enjoy a diet of leaves, fruits, flowers and tender shoots. They can spend up to 15 hours a day sleeping or resting, often while hanging upside down!

Hoffmann's two-toed sloths are currently listed as Least Concern in the wild, but habitat loss and deforestation continue to threaten the forests they call home.

While Cosmo and Wanda currently live behind the scenes, you can visit our third sloth, 7-year-old Joe, at the ARC! Be sure to look up when you visit. You might just spot Joe climbing around above your head! 🌿
