Our summer student intern Hannah hosted a cake decorating 4-H project workshop on Wednesday with help from 4-H member Lydia from Taylor Creek Lads and Lassies.

Participants received help to crumb coat their cakes and learned and practiced several piping techniques on parchment paper before trying on their cakes. This workshop counted as one of their required Learning Experiences to record in their project book.

Reminder:
An Evening Garden Affair, a program hosted by Ohio State Extension-Hardin County Master Gardener Volunteer Program, will be held Tuesday, June 23 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Friendship Gardens, 960 W. Kohler St. in Kenton.

Join us to learn about the importance of native plants from guest speaker Chad Carrell of The Native Pathways Nursery and Hancock Park District.

6:00-6:45 p.m. - registration, Friendship Gardens tour, refreshments at the Friendship Gardens

6:45-7:00 p.m. - transition to Simon Kenton School

7:00-8:00 p.m. - formal program at Simon Kenton School

Please note that overflow parking will be at the Hardin Soil and Water Conservation District parking lot located at 950 W. Kohler St. Simon Kenton School building has a fan but no air conditioning, so please dress accordingly.

May brought high rainfall totals across the county with some townships receiving over 7 and 8 inches. Complete rainfall data for the 2026 growing season can be found at hardin.osu.edu under the Agriculture and Natural Resources program area tab.

OSU Extension in Hardin County will be closed on Friday, June 19 for the observation of Juneteenth.

Staff will return on Monday, June 22 for regular business hours. Voicemails and emails can be directed to any staff member and we will respond upon our return.

On Wednesday, June 24 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., OSU Extension in Hardin County is hosting a FREE Let's Start Cooking 4-H project workshop for those members taking #459 Let's Start Cooking.

Learn new cooking skills with fun recipes and learn about MyPlate while fulfilling one of your required Learning Experiences.

Please bring your project book and a positive attitude.

Livestock Interview Judging is August 11, 2026, from 1:00 to 6:00 at the Fairgrounds Community Building.

Judging is required for all 4-H members who want to show/exhibit at the Hardin County Fair. You need to sign up for ONE appointment per species. For example - if you are taking Market Rabbit and Breeding Rabbit projects, you will need ONE appointment with the Rabbit Judge. If you are taking Market Rabbit and Market Chickens, you will need TWO appointments - one with the rabbit judge and one with the poultry judge.

Those who cannot attend on August 11 can make an appointment for LATE JUDGING, which is by appointment only August 18 - 20. Appointments are first come first served. Late appointments are ineligible for awards. All projects must be judged in order to show at the Hardin County Fair.
