A new year begins… but not with fireworks, parties, or countdowns.

The Islamic year begins with Muharram, one of the four sacred months that Allah specifically honored in the Qur’an. It is a month that reminds us to slow down, reflect, and renew our relationship with Him.
Within this blessed month is the Day of Ashuraa’ (10th of Muharram), a day filled with lessons of faith, gratitude, and divine victory.

It was the day Allah saved Prophet Musa (alayhissalam) and the believers from Fir’awn. When the Prophet ﷺ learned of this, he fasted on this day and encouraged his followers to fast as well.

He ﷺ said, “Fasting the day of Ashuraa’, I hope from Allah, forgives the sins of the previous year.” (Muslim)

As we enter a new Islamic year, don’t just turn the calendar page, turn a new page with Allah.

Reflect on the year that has passed.
Repent for your shortcomings.
Set sincere goals for your akhirah.
Fast the 9th and 10th (or 10th and 11th) of Muharram.

A single day of fasting can be the means of erasing a year’s worth of sins. What a generous Lord we worship.

May Allah allow us to begin this year with faith, gratitude, and a heart that is closer to Him than ever before.

The new Islamic year is upon us. Tonight, the moon for the 1st of Muharram, 1448 Hijri, is expected to be sighted clearly in the Americas. We ask Allah what the prohpet ﷺ taught us, “O Allah make the new moon rise upon us with security, faith, safety, and Islam. My Lord and your Lord is Allah.” (Tirmidhi)

Fasting on the 10th of Muharram is a sunnah which rewards one with forgiveness of the previous year’s sins. Fasting a day before or after it is also encouraged. Allah accept from us all our worship and bring for us and this ummah safety and security.

Over a decade dealing with marriage, divorce cases, and conflict resolutions… A message from Imam Arshad:

Over the years, the amount of people reaching out for help has only increased. Many people go into a marriage without fully setting expectations and understanding their rights, the rights they owe, and how to spiritually and emotionally set up a relationship so there is a healthy balance maintained in it.

I have also seen that many do not understand how divorce works. Too often people weaponize Islam when it is convenient to get what they want while ignoring their obligations or the rights granted to the other party.

For this, and many other reasons, I am preparing a workshop on the laws of marriage & divorce in Islam.

The goals of this workshop are:

1. To increase religious literacy about the topic so people go into marriages prepared and understand what Allah asks of them.

2. To promote the healthy, best practices that are revealed in the Quran & sunnah.

3. To encourage people whose marriages are struggling to sincerely accept Islam’s approach to conflict resolutions and to teach that process.

4. And if the marriage is not sustainable, to educate how separation is meant to be a civil and compassionate process vs. a combative experience that leaves individuals and children traumatized.

Stay tuned for another announcement to register your interest. Allah allow us all to honor the blessings he has bestowed upon us.
