Don’t take down your hummingbird feeders just yet!

As ruby-throated hummingbirds begin migrating south in late summer and early fall, your feeders can provide an important place to refuel along the way. Some may travel as far as 2,000 miles between their breeding and wintering grounds.

Keeping feeders up will not prevent hummingbirds from migrating—they know when it is time to leave. Continue providing fresh sugar water as long as the birds are visiting, and clean feeders with vinegar and hot water at least once a week.

Alabama is expecting extreme heat over the next few days. If you are planning to be outdoors this weekend, especially those planning to attend one of the many events across our state this weekend, pay attention to how you feel and stay hydrated.

Watch for signs of dehydration and heat-related illness, including fatigue, dizziness, headache, nausea, weakness and heavy sweating. Confusion, a rapid heartbeat or a body temperature above 104°F may indicate heat stroke, a medical emergency.

Carry a reusable water bottle and sip throughout the day rather than waiting until you feel thirsty. If you will be exercising or sweating for an extended period, consider replenishing electrolytes with a drink containing sodium and potassium. Water-rich foods such as watermelon, strawberries, cucumbers and tomatoes can also help support hydration.

Through the Auburn University Water Resources Center, Alabama Extension connects people with science-based education, resources and opportunities to better understand and protect this vital resource. Alabama Extension’s broader mission is to bring practical, research-based information to communities across the state.

Four programs help carry out this work:
Alabama Watershed Stewards provides education, tools and training to help people understand watersheds and take action to protect and improve water quality.

Alabama Water Watch, through a partnership with 4-H, works with Extension staff, teachers, informal educators and volunteers to engage young people in watershed education and water-monitioring activities.

Alabama Private Well Program supports private well owners with education, testing information and answers to common well-water questions.
Alabama Drought Reach strengthens drought communication and impact monitoring to help improve understanding of drought conditions across Alabama.

We have a new leader, and only one week left to finish strong!

Hale County has moved into first place in the Grow More, Give More 250-Pound Challenge with an impressive 15,191 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables donated. Butler County follows closely with 14,175 pounds, while Marshall, Coosa and Mobile counties round out the top five.

The competition is close, but the real victory is seeing communities across Alabama come together to help their neighbors. So far, 50 counties have reported donations, and 32 have met or exceeded the 250-pound goal.

The challenge ends next Monday, Labor Day. How many more pounds can we donate before time runs out?

Love Alabama’s outdoors and want to turn that interest into action?

The Alabama Master Naturalist Program helps adults build a deeper understanding and appreciation of Alabama’s natural world through science-based education, hands-on learning and volunteer service. Participants learn about the state’s natural resources while gaining the knowledge and experience needed to support conservation, education and natural resource management in their own communities.

Becoming a certified Alabama Master Naturalist includes completing a self-paced online course, attending two field days and completing 30 volunteer hours in Alabama. The program is designed for adults who enjoy nature, like spending time outdoors and want to make a difference through conservation and stewardship.
