There’s nothing quite like seeing a John Carney film in a packed theater, and we're so excited to announce that you'll have the opportunity to preview Power Ballad on Tuesday night, June 2, at 7 pm at the Capri Theatre in advance of its theatrical release on Friday, June 5.

When Rick (Paul Rudd), a past-his-prime wedding singer, meets fading boy-band star Danny (Nick Jonas) during a gig, the two bond over music and a late-night jam session. But when Danny turns one of Rick’s songs into the hit that reignites his career, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves—even if it means risking everything he cares about. From writer-director John Carney (Sing Street, Once), Power Ballad is a feel-good story about music, self-respect, friendship, and the price of ambition.

The Mississippi Film Society, in partnership with Lionsgate, is pleased to invite you to this preview screening of Power Ballad. Tickets are limited to four per order and are first-come, first-served. For any questions about the film and this screening, please email [email protected]. FREE Screening Alert!

Tomorrow night (Tuesday, April 28th) at 7 pm at the Capri Theatre, we will screen JOYBUBBLES, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. This is a truly special and moving film that we are lucky to have here, so I hope you can join us. More information on the film and the screening and a link to register for your tickets below.

In the 1950s, Joe Engressia, Jr. discovers he can control the global telephone system simply by whistling a magic tone. Born blind and hungry for connection, his early obsession with the telephone sparks a subculture that shapes the future of hacking and modern technology in the 20th century. Told through vivid archival footage and Joybubbles’ own voice recordings, the film celebrates a visionary who redefined connection and challenged assumptions about disability, identity, and imagination. JOYBUBBLE pulses with the curiosity and wonder he brought to the world, brought to life through director Rachael J. Morrison’s inventive, tactile storytelling.

The JOYBUBBLES team is committed to providing captions for deaf and hard of hearing audiences and audio description for blind and low vision audiences, at all of their screenings. While this is usually done with an audio description headset or a captioning device, our screening will utilize open audio description, which is the first time we've done this with a Film Society screening. Open audio description is how people who are blind or have low vision access movies. You’ll hear an audio description narrator, which fits perfectly into the sound mix to describe the on-screen action. This is the way Joybubbles would have ideally experienced a movie. If you’ve never heard audio description before, it may take a few minutes for you to adjust, but you'll find yourself acclimating quickly.

The sad fact is that audio descriptions are not always made available, so we are excited to provide this mode of accessibility for a wider audience. It’s our hope that, even if you don’t need it yourself, you’ll appreciate this new way of experiencing a film.

The Stranger Than Fiction Film Screening Series continues, Tuesday night, April 21, with a FREE screening of the hilarious documentary, MOCKBUSTER, at the Capri Theatre at 7 pm. If you love B (or even C) movies or movies about making movies, then this one is for you!

Tickets available via link below.

"Once-promising Australian filmmaker Anthony Frith lands a final shot at glory with Hollywood’s kings of B-movie schlock, the Asylum, the studio behind Sharknado. Tasked with directing a lost-world dinosaur film in suburban Adelaide on a six-day shoot and a shoestring budget, he also turns the camera on himself, filming a behind-the-scenes documentary as the chaos unfolds. Between demanding LA execs, a bewildered cast, and his own creeping self-doubt, both productions push their first-time director to the brink. Mockbuster is a hilarious and unexpectedly tender documentary about chasing the dream through the absurd hustle of genre filmmaking, but finding a different kind of success behind the scenes."

Tickets are limited to four per order and are first-come, first-served. This screening is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission.

We are back with three screenings in March!

Our first screening is this Sunday, March 1, at 2 pm at the . In partnership with and , we will screen In Search of Phillis Wheatley Peters, a 35-minute documentary that uncovers the little-known love story of Phillis Wheatley, America’s first Black published poet, and John Peters, a free Black man she married in 1778. Following the screening, a panel conversation featuring moderator Robby Luckett, scholar Ebony Lumumba, and filmmakers Leslie Askew and Turlough White will highlight Margaret Walker’s creation of the Phillis Wheatley Poetry Festival and the Black Studies program at Jackson State University. This screening is free and open to the public.

Our second screening will take place on Tuesday night March 10 at 7 PM at the Capri Theatre with a special screening of André is an Idiot, which won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. The film chronicles André Ricciardi’s final days after a stage-four cancer diagnosis caused by skipping a preventable colonoscopy. Directed by Tony Benna, the film blends raw honesty, dark humor, and animation to show how a self-proclaimed "idiot" finds joy, love, and purpose while facing death. This will be the first screening in the 2026 Stranger Than Fiction Film Series. Rather than compressing all film screenings into one weekend, I’ve decided to spread them throughout March, April, and May. You’ll receive more information about subsequent screenings in another email very soon. Please note that all screenings will be FREE this year, but reservations are highly encouraged.

In March, we are also kicking off the second season of our Capitol Pictures partnership with the Mississippi Museum of Art. This season is entitled “Beguiled” and celebrates film adaptations of Tennessee Williams novels. The first screening in this series will be A Streetcar Named Desire, which we will take place on Thursday night, March 26th at 6 pm at the Mississippi Museum of Art. You can learn more about the screening and purchase your $5 ticket here: https://10432.blackbaudhosting.com/10432/Capital-Pictures-Beguiled--A-Streetcar-Named-Desire
