Meet the Sauti ya Dada girls from Girl Power Foundation in Uganda! In these videos, they share what they're most excited about ahead of the upcoming EAGLS Summit. They can't wait to connect with fellow girls from across East Africa, share their experiences, learn from one another, and grow together as future leaders.

"The most beautiful part is sharing the message about the importance of caring for water. This mural will bring us together and inspire future generations." - Catalina, Masiguito community member

On World Environment Day this June, our partners at Artists for Soup led a Creative Advocacy Practicum (CAP) in Masiguito, Nicaragua, with tree planting, environmental education, and creative activities.

Children and local women designed a community mural from their own drawings and ideas, then painted it themselves. It celebrates Masiguito's connection to water: the river, native trees, local wildlife, and a message to future generations to protect it.

What does health really mean? For the grassroots leaders in our latest One Health course in Peru, it's bigger than any one person.

In this video, participants explain the One Health approach in their own words: humans, animals, and the environment are all connected, and you can't care for one without the others. They share practical actions their communities can take, like siembra y cosecha de agua (water sowing and harvesting), where water is filtered back into the ground through infiltration ditches and reforestation.

They also point to something you can't build from scratch: the ancestral knowledge already alive in their communities. Documenting it, sharing it between elders and children, and keeping it at the center is part of the work. As one participant puts it, health isn't individual. It's a web where everything connects. Clean water, healthy soil, and community knowledge are the foundation of buen vivir, living well, together.

2 weeks till our East Africa Girls Leadership Summit ⏳

Every year the summit brings together girls from our Sauti ya Dada program to sharpen their skills in leadership, climate justice, and advocacy, and to build a network of peers pushing for change across the region.

96% of girls report being better equipped to advocate for change in their communities after attending.

This week we launched our One Health course in Pisac, Peru 🇵🇪 One Health is a widely used framework that treats human, animal, and environmental health as one connected system rather than three separate ones.

Over three days, 15 leaders from our partner organizations in Peru, Bolivia, and Panama came together to explore the connections between environmental and community health 🌱 Each person worked through the same question: what does my environment need for me to live in full health?

Using clay and natural materials, along with each other's stories, participants kept landing in the same place. Healthy forests, clean water 💧, biodiversity, caring relationships, and strong communities came up again and again as what people need to thrive.

It was a good reminder that our wellbeing is tied to the world around us 🌍 and to the choices we make every day.

Don Comb, founder of the New England Biolabs Foundation, was a passionate scientist and committed environmentalist whose legacy spans molecular biology, conservation, the arts, and biocultural diversity.
For decades, Don championed a vision of conservation rooted in people, place, and culture. He believed in investing in small and grassroots organizations working to protect their landscapes, livelihoods, and biodiversity.

One of the most powerful outcomes of the Creative Environmental Leadership Program (CELP) is seeing participants bring creative leadership tools back to their organizations.

Following their participation in CELP, Joel Castillo and Byron Santos Seijas of Sustainable Harvest International facilitated a workshop with their team exploring leadership identity, communication, and collaboration.

By adapting and sharing our participatory approaches, SHI Honduras is a great example of how CELP participants multiply the program's impact well beyond the training itself! 💛

CAP Highlight! 🎉 Girls in the Their Voice Initiative Sauti ya Dada club found that family conflict was preventing girls from feeling supported in their studies, resulting in many dropping out of school. To raise awareness and demand change, they wrote skits, painted a public mural, and facilitated an open and honest discussion with their community.

We are so proud of these girls and the work they are doing to advocate for their rights to stay in school and be leaders in their communities! 💛

🎨 Across our programs in Latin America, East Africa, and West Africa, visual art has been a tool for learning, dialogue, advocacy, and community action.

Participants and communities have used creative practices to raise awareness, strengthen local leadership, celebrate cultural identity, protect the environment, advance gender equity, and address social challenges. Through environmental leadership programs, girls' empowerment initiatives, and community-based advocacy, creative expression has helped people share their stories, build confidence, and spark real change. ✨
