Hawkeye & Friends Dog Rescue & Sanctuary

Hawkeye & Friends Dog Rescue & Sanctuary Hawkeye & Friends is a non-profit dog sanctuary that cares for dogs who are old/older, have a handicap or medical issue. Hawkeye & Friends is a sanctuary.

The dogs who come here spend the rest of their lives here receiving the love & care they deserve. Hawkeye & Friends was started and continues today because there needed to be a change. Too many beautiful and wonderful dogs need a safe place to live; where their days are filled with lots running & playing or just lying around and taking it easy; a place where they can spend the rest of their lives

and get all the love and care they deserve. Big & small, young & old, in good health and not Hawkeye & Friends saves & cares for the dogs nobody wants. These are dogs passed up for adoption at county shelters, dogs most other rescues won’t take because they are too hard to adopt because they are old, have a handicap, medical problem or behavior issue. But with just a little extra attention and lots of love the dogs who come to here spend the rest of their lives here. This is their forever home. Hawkeye & Friends has made a change, a life-saving change, in the lives of hundreds of dogs. We survive solely on donations from people who love animals, especially dogs and with your support you can be part of a wonderful change in the lives of so many sweet, sassy, smart, not-so-smart, laid back, not-so-laid back, quiet, not-so-quiet, well-behaved, not-so-well-behaved but all incredible dogs. Your support will help Hawkeye & Friends continue our never-ending mission.

I LIKE BIG MUTTS AND I CANNOT LIE

Like most families and businesses right now our budget has also been taking a hit the last few months. Donations are down. It's scary. Today, Gustopher Augustus (Gus Gus, Gus, Gusto, Gus-a-roni, Gus meister, The Guster, Mr. Handsome) came up to me and said, "Dad, let's do an Only Paws photo shoot. I'm ready." I was a bit hesitant but thought "what the heck." And boy oh boy, Gus turned it on. Now, before we go any further, Gus has embraced and is proud of his "not so svelt" physique. It took him eating lots of extra snacks to get where he is and he is looking good. Having said that, you should know this Only Paws fundraiser is geared more towards "doggie chubby chasers" - you know, those of us who like a little "extra meat" on our dogs. The bigger the dog the more there is to hug & kiss. This past March marked 5 years since I found Gus tied to the front gate here at Hawkeye & Friends. Someone very quietly walked on the property with Gus around 10pm, tied him to the gate and left him there. I was in bed and heard him crying. I couldn't see him because it was dark. I grabbed the flashing light, went out front and found him tied to the gate. I brought him in and he is one of the best dogs I've ever had the pleasure of caring for. He is a happy, happy (and a bit chubby) dog. And, as you'll see and appreciate, is one photogenic boy. Enjoy the photos and if you would like to help Hawkeye & Friends continue caring for wonderful dogs like Gus below is a link to make a donation via PayPal. Gus, all his brothers & sisters and I thank you.

As I was taking photos of Gus I noticed Dudley next to his younger brother Tony. Being the protective big brother Dudley is, he thought Tony is a bit young to see this kind of material/activity so he did what came naturally and shielded his younger brother's eyes with a paw to the face. Sweet boys.

Here is the link to make a donation via PayPal to help Hawkeye & Friends continue saving & caring for so many wonderful dogs. All donations are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Holy smokes! High speed police chase happening right now on Imlay City Road (M-21) going west. Just passed here (M-21 & Cade Rd. heading west). Motorcycle at about 100 mph being chased by police with lights & siren right behind. This is slow folk territory. Ain't used to things going so fast.

For the past several days right around 6pm each day there have been deer coming into the woods between here and Neighbor Jim. The dogs let me know they're there especially Beagle twins Emma & Bailey. Their "beagleness" goes into overdrive. If it weren't for the fence the chase would be on. And each day Hank looks at me and asks "Can we keep 'em, Dad?" Sweet boy.

Six years ago today (7/11/2020) I took in Boone, a then 13 yrs 11 months old Plotthound in need of a home. This morning I said goodbye to 19 yrs 11 months old Boone. He lived a wonderful life here the last six years. He loved being able to go in & out as he pleased, enjoyed all the activity with his brothers & sisters and greeted everyone at the front gates with lots & lots of welcoming barks. Over the past couple of years he slowed down, got much grayer, still loved to eat and got around just fine. But this past week things changed quickly. His backend started giving out on him and he was having extreme difficulty getting up and staying standing. His body just wore out. A great big thank you to Lisa at Hollow Corners for making the hardest thing to do a bit easier. Goodbye, Boone. Goodbye, buddy. Thank you for all the memories. See ya at the bridge.

UPDATE: 10AM TUESDAY 7/7/2026: Great news! Harlow is back home. Thank you to everyone who shared the post.

Is anyone in the Imlay City Road & Cade Rd. area missing a brown female dog with a shock collar? This dog has been in the area since Saturday night but this is the first photo a neighbor was able to get of her. As of approximately 7pm today she was at my neighbor's house just east of me. She did eat some chicken and drink a bowl of water. If this is your dog or know who she belongs to call or text me at 810 417 3321 and I'll get you in touch with the person who has her. If you live in the area please share this post. Let's get this girl back home. Thank you.

Sweet Lexi, just shy of 16, enjoying a corner of the big blue pad. Out of the photo is a wall fan pointed directly on her making her extra comfy. It's warm already this morning (upper 70's without a cloud in the sky) so Lexi knows she has a cool spot for the rest of today and the upcoming heat wave next week.

7-8 years ago I discovered a great bedding option for the dogs - gym mats. They're comfy for the dogs especially the older ones who can no longer jump up on the bed or a couch or a chair, they're easy to clean and they come in a variety of sizes. Once or twice a year I look online for gym mats on sale and a couple days ago I found a 5 ft x 5 ft pad/mat for a good price. It's called a crash pad designed for kids to play & fall on. It arrived this morning and holy smokes, it's big. It's 5 ft x 5 ft but also about 18 inches tall/thick. I didn't expect that but the dogs are liking it. I did have to place little Puddles the Pom on top and Roxie the Yorkie immediately jumped up next to him. The other dogs checked it out and finally Gustopher Agustus (Gus Gus) jumped on too. After a few minutes little Puddles kind of slid off and left Gus to enjoy their new bed to himself. I'm hoping this flattens out a bit so all the little ones can enjoy it too.
