Our Culinary Program students are building real-world job skills by practicing how to read order tickets, communicate with their team, and accurately fulfill customer orders!

From reading the ticket to getting the order out the door, every step is an opportunity to practice teamwork, attention to detail, time management, and confidence in the kitchen.

We’re so proud of the progress our students are making!

Today we learned all about lettuce and the different types of salads! 🥬🥗 Our students learned about different varieties of lettuce, how they’re used in salads, and how to properly clean and prepare lettuce for safe eating.

Then we put our skills to work and made a delicious fruit salad with fresh peaches and whipped cream!

Another fun and delicious day of learning in the kitchen! We love seeing our students build confidence and practical culinary skills with every lesson! ❤️

Our Culinary Program students are gaining more than hands-on cooking experience! They are building the knowledge and certifications they need to succeed in the food service industry!

As part of our program, students complete ServSafe Food Handler training, learning essential food safety practices like proper handwashing, preventing cross-contamination, safe food temperatures, personal hygiene, and more. 🧤🌡️

Food safety is a critical part of working in any professional kitchen, and we’re proud to give our students the tools and confidence they need to enter the workforce prepared!

Skills. Confidence. Certification. A recipe for success! 👏🏽🍽️

That’s a wrap on Baking Week! Our students had a sweet week in the kitchen, and we’re ending it on a high note by making delicious chocolate chip cookies for the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office! 🍪💙

We also had a very special guest join us in the kitchen - Sheriff Cox! 👮‍♂️ He rolled up his sleeves, helped our students with the baking, and shared some fantastic advice about what it takes to be a great employee - skills that can make a difference in any workplace.

We are so grateful for Sheriff Cox and PIO Kristen Leitch for spending time with our students, supporting our program, and encouraging the next generation of employees!

Thank you for your continued support of our students, Calvert County Sheriff's Office!

Sweet Success in the Kitchen!

Our Culinary Program students put their skills to the test making molten chocolate soufflés! From carefully preparing the batter to watching that delicious chocolate center come to life, our students practiced precision, patience, and plenty of teamwork.

And yes… they were every bit as delicious as they looked!

🌭 Baking Week: From Dough to Chili Dogs & Chicago Dogs!

It’s Baking Week in The Culinary Program, and we had an incredible day learning the art of baking with yeast! 🍞👩‍🍳

We were so excited to welcome Chef Brandon Moser from Wharf 38 who joined us in the kitchen to teach our students all about working with yeast as we made homemade hot dog buns. And he brought along an amazing sous chef - one of our very own alumni, Corrie! ❤️

After completing The Culinary Program, Corrie was hired by Brandon at Wharf 38, and watching her return to our kitchen, teach our current students, and share her positive experiences from both the program and her employment was truly special. It was an amazing opportunity for our students to see firsthand where the skills they are learning can lead!

Our students worked together as a team to make chili dogs and Chicago dogs from start to finish. From chopping onions and making chili to preparing dough for hot dog buns, everyone had an important role in making lunch happen.

We are so proud of the teamwork, confidence, and enthusiasm our students brought to the kitchen today. And we are incredibly grateful to Chef Brandon and Corrie for sharing their time, knowledge, and experiences with our students!

Learning new skills. Building confidence. Creating connections. Opening doors to employment. ❤️

Today our students put their culinary math skills to work in some hands-on and, of course, delicious ways!

We learned about:
🍚 Wet vs. dry measuring - and why the right measuring tool matters
⚖️ Portioning & food service math - weighing food and practicing how to divide portions
📋 Recipe building - understanding the important components of a recipe and following directions
📦 Dry storage inventory - practicing organization and keeping track of kitchen supplies
⭐️ And more!!!

Our favorite activity? Rice Krispie treats! We worked in teams - one group followed a real recipe while the other tackled a very silly recipe with instructions like “add 3 smidges of butter!” 😂 This was a fun way to see just how important clear, accurate measurements and instructions are in a recipe.

A huge THANK YOU to Mr. Mike, one of our amazing job coaches, for joining us today and helping our students learn, practice, and build confidence! We are so grateful for the support our job coaches provide. ❤️

Today was a great reminder that math is everywhere in the kitchen - and every measurement matters!

Today we welcomed the K Team, Kurt and Karen, into the kitchen! They worked alongside our students as they practiced their knife skills while making fresh pico de gallo!

Knife skills are about so much more than chopping! Learning how to safely and confidently use a knife helps our students build safety awareness, coordination, precision, independence, and essential workplace skills they can carry with them into a professional kitchen.

A huge thank you to Kurt and Karen for sharing your time, knowledge, and expertise with our students! We are so grateful for your support of The Culinary Program and the hands-on learning experiences you help make possible.

Give our students and the K Team some love! 🙌🏻🔪🍅
