"The Appalachian Mountains are only now beginning to be recognized as one of the primary incubators of African-American music, especially the blues tradition... Why, with such an array of blues legends—the Empress of the blues, the Queen of the blues, and the Godfather of soul—has the region's blues tradition received so little attention?"

June is Black Music Month! As such, we wanted to share this article we found from the Smithsonian Folkways Magazine! Black Music has had an incredible impact on Appalachian Music, just consider the banjo! The banjo is a traditional African instrument that has become synonymous with our region and culture.
