Houston is home to one of the largest theater districts in the country, and our Black Box Theater is proud to be part of that legacy. From concerts and plays to film screenings and cultural performances, this is where community and creativity converge. A flexible space, reimagined for every performance.

Last month, we launched our inaugural International Lecture Series, welcoming Former President of Kyrgyzstan, Roza Otunbayeva, for a powerful keynote and fireside chat on “Central Asia: Today and Tomorrow.” Moderated by Art Chavez of Asia Society Texas and Stantec, the conversation highlighted the region’s evolving landscape and the importance of inclusive development, a true celebration of global dialogue and exchange. We look forward to hosting more thoughtful dialogues like this again soon.

Last month, over 150 community members gathered at the Ismaili Center for the District C Candidate Runoff Forum, an evening of real conversation, thoughtful questions, and civic energy. Moderated by Leah Wolfthal, Chief of Staff to Councilmember Julian Ramirez, candidates Joe Panzarella and Nick Hellyar discussed the issues that matter most to our neighborhoods: flooding and drainage, transportation and mobility, pedestrian and cyclist safety, housing affordability, and neighborhood growth. Congratulations to both candidates on their campaigns, and to Joe Panzarella on becoming our next District C Council Member.

Now on view at the Ismaili Center: Sending Miracles to Mother Earth (2022) by Hana Shahnavaz.

Located on the Level 2 Stair Landing, this luminous work invites reflection on the relationship between humanity and the natural world through an intricately detailed composition of Austrian crystals.

Shahnavaz’s work expands the tradition of Persian miniature painting while examining the connection between art, ecology, and place.

Be sure to stop by and experience it in person during your next visit to the Ismaili Center!

When visiting the Central Atrium, be sure to look up. 👆 Rising over 70 feet, this stunning space is formed by stepped screens leading your eye to the oculus, a skylight, at the very top. Even on a rainy day, it’s a striking sight to see.

We were honored to host a welcome reception celebrating Michele Leal’s appointment as Director of the Mayor’s Office of the Arts. It was a wonderful celebration of Houston’s thriving arts and cultural community and a great opportunity to hear from both Michele and Mayor Whitemire on the vision for the program. The arts bring us together, and the Ismaili Center is proud to be a space where culture, creativity, and community thrive.

Congratulations, Michele and we hope to work together on future initiatives!
