On this day, June 8, 1814, Brigadier General Tom Green was born.

Few Texans better embodied the spirit of the Republic and the Confederacy than Tom Green. A veteran of the Texas Revolution, a defender of the Republic of Texas, and later one of the most respected cavalry commanders in the Confederate Army, Green served his state with courage and distinction throughout his life.

During the War Between the States, Green fought at Valverde, Galveston, and throughout the Trans-Mississippi Theater, earning a reputation for aggressive leadership and unwavering determination. His exploits made him one of the most admired military figures in Texas history.

On April 12, 1864, while leading his men during the Red River Campaign, General Green was killed at Blair’s Landing, Louisiana. He was 49 years old.

Today we remember the life, service, and sacrifice of Brigadier General Tom Green—a Texas patriot whose legacy continues to inspire generations.

On this Memorial Day, we pause to honor the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to this nation.

Today, among the quiet rows of Confederate Field at the Texas State Cemetery, American flags stand beside the graves of veterans — a solemn reminder that sacrifice, duty, and remembrance transcend generations.

Whatever uniform they wore, these Americans answered the call of their time. Their stories are part of our shared history, and their memory deserves our respect.

The Civil War had effectively ended.

Lee had surrendered at Appomattox. Johnston had laid down his arms. But along the Rio Grande in South Texas… the fighting was not yet over.

In this episode of Lone Star Warriors: Texans in the Civil War, we tell the story of the Battle of Palmito Ranch — the last land battle of the Civil War, fought more than a month after Appomattox and ending in a Confederate victory.

Featuring historian Jeffrey W. Hunt, author of The Last Battle of the Civil War: Palmetto Ranch, this episode brings to life the soldiers, commanders, and dramatic final clash that closed the war in Texas.

🔥 May 5, 1864 – The Battle of the Wilderness 🔥

On this day, 162 years ago, the tangled thickets of the Wilderness in Virginia erupted into one of the most brutal and chaotic battles of the War Between the States. Visibility was limited, command and control broke down, and the fighting devolved into close-range chaos—fire, smoke, and confusion everywhere.

But in the midst of that chaos, Hood’s Texas Brigade once again proved why they were among the most feared fighting men in the Army of Northern Virginia.

When the Confederate line was in danger of breaking under intense Union pressure, the Texans were called forward. With their trademark grit and determination, they surged into the fight—delivering a powerful counterattack that stabilized the line and helped turn the tide at a critical moment. It was a stand that embodied the fighting spirit of Texas soldiers—unyielding, aggressive, and decisive when it mattered most.

Their actions in the Wilderness were not just brave—they were pivotal.

🎂 On This Day in History – Happy Birthday, General John Bankhead Magruder 🇨🇱

Born on May 1, 1807, John Bankhead Magruder was one of the most colorful and resourceful commanders of the War Between the States.

A graduate of United States Military Academy and a veteran of the Mexican–American War, Magruder earned early distinction for his boldness and flair. But it was along the Texas coast where he would leave his most lasting mark.

In January 1863, at the Battle of Galveston, Magruder orchestrated one of the Confederacy’s most daring victories—recapturing the city using improvised “cottonclad” steamers and coordinated land and naval attacks. It remains one of the most remarkable Confederate successes west of the Mississippi.

Known as “Prince John” for his dramatic style and love of ceremony, Magruder combined showmanship with battlefield ingenuity—often using deception and theatrics to magnify the appearance of his forces and confuse his enemies.

Today, we remember a man whose leadership helped defend Texas soil and whose legacy still echoes in the history of the Lone Star State.
