On this day, June 8, 1814, Brigadier General Tom Green was born.
Few Texans better embodied the spirit of the Republic and the Confederacy than Tom Green. A veteran of the Texas Revolution, a defender of the Republic of Texas, and later one of the most respected cavalry commanders in the Confederate Army, Green served his state with courage and distinction throughout his life.
During the War Between the States, Green fought at Valverde, Galveston, and throughout the Trans-Mississippi Theater, earning a reputation for aggressive leadership and unwavering determination. His exploits made him one of the most admired military figures in Texas history.
On April 12, 1864, while leading his men during the Red River Campaign, General Green was killed at Blair’s Landing, Louisiana. He was 49 years old.
