Houston Chow Chow Connection Succeeding in meeting the hopes and dreams of potential adopters by matching them with chow chows in need of new forever homes. We ended 2023 saving 152!

Houston Chow Chow Connection is a collaborative of dog lovers and rescuers that dedicate their time, efforts and talents toward helping rescue Chow Chows in need. We are an entirely volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) organization with no administrative costs. Our rescue traces its origin back several years to the work of Dianne Watson. Dianne dedicated much of her young life to saving homeless Chows in N

orth and West Texas. In her memory, Houston Chow Chow Connection continues her passion of uniting Chow Chows with perfect forever families. HCCC began rescuing in 2013 and re-homed almost 1300 dogs since inception. Our dogs found homes on the East and West coasts of the U.S. and have traveled north and south even into Canada! As we continue to rescue and re-home more and more Chows, our costs grow. As you may know, rescuing animals takes money. Not only is there the typical care and upkeep (including food and general veterinary care), some of our rescues need specialized treatments. At HCCC we don’t pick and choose the dogs we rescue – they pick us. While the majority of our rescues are healthy, we never turn our backs on the homeless, Chows with physical issues, or disabilities. Some of our incoming babies have suffered long-term and extensive neglect. New HCCC dogs may require spay/neuter, shaving due to extensive matting, entropion and/or hip replacement surgeries, treatment of skin problems and a variety of other issues. We acquire much of our financing through donations and fund-raisers. Please help us provide our Chow babies with the quality of life they so richly deserve.

At 8 years old and 69 pounds, Buddi is the kind of companion who makes a house feel like home. This handsome Chow Chow has a calm, steady presence — the quiet comfort of sunshine warming your day without asking for anything in return. ☀️💛

Buddi and his best friend Mitzi were once left behind with nothing but each other until rescue stepped in. Mitzi has found her forever family… and Buddi is still patiently waiting for someone to see just how special he is.

He’s a low-key king who enjoys the simple things:
🌻 Short walks in the fresh air
🐿️ Watching squirrels like a dedicated neighborhood supervisor
💛 Relaxing near his person, happy just to be together

Buddi doesn’t want a busy or chaotic life. He wants connection, consistency, and someone nearby who understands that loyalty takes time — but is worth everything. Like many Chows, he may start off reserved, but once you earn his trust, you gain a deeply devoted best friend. ✨

At 6 years old and about 40 lbs, Kelsey is a fluffy, loyal companion who just needed a calm place to land. Outside of the shelter, her true personality is shining—she’s affectionate, playful, and loves spending time close to her trusted person. Like spring itself, she’s opening up more with each passing day. ☀️🌷

While the shelter was overwhelming for her, Kelsey has been decompressing beautifully in a peaceful home. With patience and understanding, she continues to grow into the sweet, loving dog she was always meant to be. 🌼

From Houston streets to a second chance… Xina is finally safe. 💛

Xina is a merle Chow Chow found as a stray in Houston, TX, facing an uncertain future. Thanks to quick action and dedicated volunteers, she is now out of harm’s way and beginning her decompression journey.

Right now, she’s taking it all in—learning that she’s safe, that meals come regularly, and that kindness exists. Dogs like Xina often need a little time to adjust, and we’re giving her exactly that.

She has a full medical intake ahead, and our team is already working behind the scenes to get her everything she needs. As we learn more about her personality and needs, we’ll continue to share updates.

Right now, this is the most important part: she made it. She’s safe. 🐾

🆘✨ NOW SAFE: Kramer ✨🆘

This sweet boy is officially safe and out of a bad placement situation in Odessa today. We were able to step in after he was listed for rehoming and make sure he moves through rescue channels where he’ll be protected, understood, and given the chance he deserves. 🤍

Kramer was born January 1st and is already neutered and up to date on vaccines—we’re just working on getting his vet records officially transferred over.

A few notes from his previous home so we can set him up for success moving forward:

He was mostly being fed human food, so we’ll be gently transitioning him to a proper diet
He’s a young, mouthy puppy, and reportedly didn’t do well with a 7-year-old child—this is likely normal puppy behavior that just needs structure and guidance

He’s still very much in that “figuring life out” stage, and now he finally has the chance to do it safely, with consistency and care.

Kramer will continue through our network and is expected to land in the Austin area with Carol as he transitions into the next step of his journey.

These two sweet pups came from a situation where they were originally purchased thinking they were tiny Pomeranians… and surprise—they just kept growing. Now they’re safe in rescue, fully vetted, and learning what it means to feel secure, loved, and part of a family.

✨ BUBBLES
Bubbles is a calm, affectionate girl who loves her people deeply. She greets you at the door like you’re the best part of her day and prefers to stay close wherever you are—especially if that’s the bed. 💕

She’s very touch-oriented and will gently paw or nudge you when she wants attention. She’s still a puppy and teething, so she may occasionally get into things she shouldn’t if things get too quiet 😅 but overall she’s easygoing, crate comfortable, and a slow, thoughtful eater.

✨ PICKLES
Pickles is a gentle, sweet puppy who bonds closely with her people and feels most secure when someone is nearby. She does best with encouragement for eating and potty time, especially when she can see her person.

She is a total cuddle bug and loves being part of the action—especially with kids and other dogs. Puppy pile? She’s in it. 💛 She truly believes she’s a lap dog and will lean right into you for comfort and reassurance.

She’s still learning manners like not jumping and not being mouthy, and she’s getting used to grooming. She can be a messy drinker and has a soft spot for ponytails, but at her core she is incredibly loving and eager to please.

🧸✨ Baloo Is Safe & Settling In ✨🧸

Baloo’s story could have gone a very different way—but thanks to a team that stepped up right when it mattered most, this sweet boy is now safe. 💛

Picked up as a stray in Houston, Baloo didn’t have anyone to claim him… but he does now. From the moment he was seen, people rallied to make sure he wouldn’t be overlooked or lost in the system. Because of that, he’s now safe in a foster home, where he can decompress, feel comfort, and start learning what it means to be cared for. 🏡

These first few days are all about letting him settle, observe, and start to feel the weight lift. We’ll be learning more about his personality as he relaxes—but what we do know already is that he’s worth saving, worth loving, and worth showing up for. 🐾

Every safe dog like Baloo is a reminder of what teamwork, compassion, and quick action can do. Thank you to everyone who played a part in getting him here. This is just the beginning for him.

This sweet boy has been in a temporary foster home for about 3 weeks and is adjusting beautifully. He’s friendly with both people and other dogs and continues to settle in more each day. 💛

He is now ready to take his next step: finding a forever home.
