Shasta County, California.
Thousands of ballots and election materials from the November 2024 election were headed for the shredder, despite an ongoing public records dispute and a pending court hearing.
Just days earlier, sealed ballot boxes had been opened, revealing election log sheets and other materials mixed in with ballots. Records that should be preserved for two years and others—per California Elections Code § 17300—that "shall" be preserved for 5 years.
But the destruction moved forward.
Eyewitness Arne Edward List was there to document the process. From the September 30th unboxing of the materials, to the October 3rd arrival of the shredding truck, and to the final moments. He captured the events as they unfolded, attempted to ask the county officials questions, interviewed the citizens involved, and recorded what happened behind the scenes.
